Michael Myal Obituary

Michael Myal 82, of Tucson, AZ died on Monday, November 12, 2012 of ALS. Mick was born in Omer, MI on September 14, 1930. He graduated from General Motors Institute with a BS in Mechanical Engineering in 1953. Mick served in the Army from 1954 to 1957 and was stationed in Europe where he developed a lifelong love of travel. Mick married Suzanne (Hoag) Myal of Battle Creek, MI in 1959. He became a Registered Professional Engineer in 1967. He worked at General Motors as part of their design staff where he earned a U.S. patent for an invention that is still used in automotive production today. Later, he worked at GM International Regulations traveling around the world. Mick was a founding member and trip director for Nomads, a Detroit based flying club. He traveled throughout the U.S. and more than 25 different countries on five continents during his lifetime. He built a Vari-EZE airplane in his garage in Warren, Michigan and flew it at the local airport. In 1988 Mick and Suzanne retired to Tucson. Mick followed his passion for airplanes with the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 81, serving as chapter treasurer. He also created Contact!, a non-profit magazine for airplane enthusiasts to share their expertise and knowledge of home built airplanes using automotive engines. He was a familiar face at many EEA annual fly-ins including Oshkosh, WI, Sun 'n Fun, FL and Copper State AZ where he hosted panel discussions focusing on automotive engine conversions. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne; his sister, Clara of Phoenix; three children, Julie of Phoenix, John (Hilda) of San Antonio, Jane (Jon) of Detroit and six grandchildren. As per Mick's wishes, there will be no Memorial Service. For those who wish to honor Mick, the family requests donations to be made to Contact!, the non- profit organization that continues to publish the magazine which he founded. Erwin and I had many good times with Mick and Susie when they lived in Warren.
Our children grew up with their children. He was a very good nighbor. We misswed them when they moved to AZ

Nancy & I met Mick and Sue here in Tucson about 15 years ago thru the Bina's and their joint interest in aircraft building. We has some good times together at many gatherings over the years here. Mick will be missed.
