Alice Malone Obituary

Alice Crist Malone 1911-2009 Pioneer Nursing Educator Alice Crist Malone died at her home in Tucson on February 2, 2009. She was 97 years old. Alice was born and grew up in Powell, Ohio, near Columbus. Her parents, Minor and Ethel Crist, had four other children, Gerald, Ralph, Miriam and Anita. All preceded Alice in death. Also predeceased by spouse. She graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelors degree in 1934 and a masters degree in 1937. In 1936 Sigma Theta Tau, Honor Society of Nursing, awarded Alice a sum of $600 to study measures of achievement among students at Ohio State. In 1936 the average income was $1713. So this was a substantial award. In 1940 Professor Crist was recruited from The University of Chicago to become the first nursing faculty hired by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. She was key in the development of the program and remained at the University until her retirement. On January 24, 1942 she married Joseph G. Malone of McKeesport, PA. They built their home there and remained until retiring to Tucson in the 1970's. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends in 1992. They had no children but are survived by numerous nieces and nephews. The family expresses deep appreciation for the many kindnesses of Alice's special friend, Nelia Castillo, Casa de La Luz Personnel, and caretakers Norma, Rose and others. Memorial Mass for Alice Malone on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 8650 N. Shannon Rd.
