Arlene Lombard Obituary

Arlene O. Lombard passed away at home on March 22, 2015 at age 85. She is survived by daughter, Anne S. Lombard; son, James P. Lombard and four grandchildren, Jessie and Jimmy Cammack and Alex and Kitty Lombard. Her dearest husband, Richard S. Lombard, passed away in 2007. Born in 1930, Minneapolis, Minnesota, she was the daughter of the late George and Ellen Olson. Her father died when she was five years old and was raised by her mother. Arlene was a graduate of the University of Minnesota, after having studied in England under SPAN (Student Project for Amity among Nations). She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and was active in student government. Shortly after her graduation, she married Richard S. Lombard (who was born and raised in the Panama Canal Zone) and they moved to New York City, where he became an associate of a large admiralty firm. She worked at the American Scandinavian Foundation. Later, she taught at a private boys' school, the Englewood School for Boys. Arlene and Dick agreed that they wanted to see the world. He was bilingual in Spanish and English and a quick call to the Harvard Law School produced several job offers. Within six months, they were on their way by Grace Line to Caracas, Venezuela, where Dick joined the Creole Petroleum Corp. (a subsidiary of the standard Oil Co. NJ.). They loved Caracas and stayed there for ten years, during which time, Arlene taught at an International School, had two children, and they began a life of travel. Upon their return to New York, they moved to Chappaqua, NY., primarily for the excellence of the school system. They all made many trips abroad and also saw much of the US. When Anne and Jim went off to school/college, Arlene was able to travel extensively with her husband since his company, ExxonMobil, is located worldwide. They spent much time in England and Spain. On one special trip to Japan, she christened a ship, an oil tanker. They also lived in Houston and Dallas. In recent years, she guided her four grandchildren through colleges all over the country. Donations to the Arlene Olson Lombard Scholarship Fund at the University of Minnesota would be greatly appreciated. Please join the family for a Visitation at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at EAST LAWN PALMS MORTUARY with graveside services to follow at 3:00 p.m. at East Lawn Cemetery, 5801 E. Grant Rd. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, April 18, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.

My condolences to the family. I met Arlene years ago after Dick was diagnosed with his illness and he wanted to write a memoir. He dictated a few chapters and from that I learned of the extraordinary life he and Arlene shared. I visited them in their home during this time and we all shared a love of dogs. I am glad they are together again.
