Steve Sample Obituary

Steve O. Sample, Sr.
Steve O. Sample, Sr. died on August 22, 2020 in Bellingham, Wash. He was born on December 19, 1930 in Normal, Ill. After graduating from University High School in Bloomington, Ill., Steve spent three years playing in and writing arrangements professionally. Fifty years later, his high school would honor him with its Distinguished Alumni Award.
Steve's father served in the military during WWI, his brother during WWII, and he followed tradition when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. While stationed at Craig Air Force Base in Selma, Ala., he met and married the late Joe Ann McGee, and together they had three children.
Steve enrolled in The University of Alabama, earned his bachelor's degree in three years and was immediately offered a teaching position on the music faculty thanks, in large part, to Col. Carleton K. Butler. He served as musical arranger and halftime announcer for the Million Dollar Band from 1955 to 1973. After completing his master's degree in 1962, he attained the rank of Professor. During his 34 year tenure, Steve taught Theory and Composition, 18th Century Counterpoint, Form and Analysis, Orchestration, Arranging, Advanced Arranging and Music Calligraphy. He founded and directed the Jazz Ensembles and also designed the curriculum for the bachelor and master programs in Arranging.
Many of his students went on to become professional musicians and teachers; others took the skills and lessons he taught to become doctors, lawyers, and business people with a love for music. He followed their careers with pride and felt fortunate to have been a teacher to them.
In 2008, Steve was honored with induction into the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame, and in 2016, he was inducted into the Al Jolson Jazz Hall of Fame. Not only musically talented, Steve was an avid woodworker. His love of nature and the outdoors led him to become a dedicated bass fisherman becoming the first president of the West Alabama Bass Fisherman's Association.
Steve was predeceased by parents Ygonde and Leon H. Sample; by his sister, Marllene; and by his brother, Leon Jr. Sample. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Brenda Burns Sample of Bellingham, Wash.; and his children, Steve O. Sample, Jr. (Brenda Ferguson Sample) of Alabaster, Ala., daughter, Lee Marllene "Martie" Sample of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and son, Geoffrey Sample (Maria) of Ponte Vedra, Fla.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Joel Byrd (Kasey) of Tuscaloosa, Alexandra and Kevin Sample of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; and great-grandchild, Vada Byrd of Tuscaloosa, Ala.

What an incredible man and teacher! He taught me so much about music theory and the rules of arranging. I still remember walking into his class. I was a transfer student from Atlanta and begin his Music Theory II. He spent the first 10 minutes of the class filling up the chalkboard with music theory corner to corner then turned around and said "If you don't already know everything on the board, you fail now" I ended up taking Theory I instead. This man meant business. He pushed you beyond your limits. Best Theory teacher in the world. He will be missed!

Steve Sample has meant so much to so many. We all learned so much about music and about life from him. He didn’t just teach music. He taught people, and he took a personal interest in each of us. The world has lost another of the great ones.

Brenda, we heard of Steve's passing from Lara. We are so sorry for your loss. We have been gone from Topper Drive for five years now. We still remember your hospitality the day you invited us to sit on your lovely side porch and have some watermelon slices. Delicious! And, once when the electricity was out, Rich was at work, and I couldn't get the garage door open. Steve came down to help me out! Although we didn't have a chance to get to know you both well, Steve and you were both super friendly when we ran into you shopping a few times. May Steve introduce "jazz" in the heavens with his musical gift that he shared so freely with all he encountered. Best to you in this difficult time...Maureen & Rich McCabe

I was one of many former students who benefited from learning from and being associated with this excellent musician and teacher. He was a great composer and arranger and I had the privilege of playing a lot of his fantastic arrangements while I was in the Alabama Cavaliers, dance band, and as a member of his 7-piece group, The Continentals, that played for dances at the Tuscaloosa country clubs and around the state of Alabama back in the '60s. My sincerest condolences to Steve's family. R.I.P., S.O.S

Steve will be so missed. His sense of humor and generosity were his gifts and we as his friends are better for having known him, and sadder for his passing.

God bless you, Steve You taught me what arranging is all about. I’ll never forget you. I’m eternally grateful to have been in your class at the U of A. The Million Dollar Band has never sounded so great as when playing one of you arrangements.
