John CUSTER Obituary

Age 90, of Oak Park Heights Died Thursday, August 22, 2013 Born to Charles and Francis Custer, March 5, 1923, in Chicago, moved to St Paul as a teen but remained loyal to his White Sox. Graduated from Central High in 1940, received his Engineering degree from the U of MN, and served in the Air Force as a meteorologist. He married Mary Jean Greig in 1947 and raised his family in LaCrosse, WI where he made a difference in many lives as a swim coach and Big Brothers mentor. Honored as 1974 Oktoberfest Festmaster. A fine woodworker, the furniture he designed and built will be cherished by generations. Jack's love of life and people was infectious. His warm smile and playful nature was contagious. His compassion and interest in others was genuine. An inspiration and mentor to many, he had a knack for making everyone feel good. But you had better guard your ice cream. Preceded in death by son Tom Custer. Survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Jean Custer; son Gary (Deb) of Nashville; son Steve of Milwaukee; daughter Laurie Stalling (Ed), of Missoula, MT; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held Friday at 3:30 at Boutwells Landing, 5600 Norwich Pkwy, Oak Park Heights, MN.
