Jean and family, I just got the news and I am shocked and saddened. It opened so many memories of our days in the Hale/Field school neighborhood. We worked hard for the pairing and we had fun doing the plays. He was the real deal, fun or serious. He will be missed.

Uncle Bob was my favorite uncle. He was such a kind and loving man who always had a positive outlook to life. He did so much for people in need and worked so hard in his fight for peace in this world. What impressed me most about Uncle Bob was his humility. He practiced what he preached in life, and that's not always easy to achieve in life. Knowing him all these years has really enriched my life, and although they say to let the love and good memories of the deceased sustain you, I can't help but feel my life a bit more empty with him gone, and I'm really going to miss him. I rejoice in knowing that I will see him again!
Your loving niece,
Linda Bachmeier

Jean and family,
Many thoughts and prayers are with you. You must have so many wonderful memories. I was very fortunate to meet, know, and protest with Bob Heberle. He was one of my peace buddies. I loved to watch the interaction he had with other vets & fellow activists. And his gentle nature and interaction with the angry others who confronted him., or a struggling vet. And there was no doubt his great love for Jean and his family. I remember him looking forward to getting a sailboat for his grandson.
He had no problem speaking truth to power, & he gave me courage to protest & his laughter kept my anger in check (most of the time) He'll be greatly missed, and it will be hard to realize he isn't just being a snow bird in FL. What a great soul we will have to watch over us.

I had the privilege to meet and know him in the Exumas when he and Jean came to visit Juana, Steve and Connor. My fondest memory is him diving off the bow of our boat to take a swim with his bride at Whales Tail. His peaceful nature and zeal for life was infectious and definitely lives on in his children, whom I am blessed to call my friends.

My memory of Mr. Heberle was when there was a precinct caucus for Walter Mondale and Bob was campaign manager? I was only in grade school with Mary and was honored to be there. My condolences in your loss.

While I did not know Bob intimately, his commitment and passion at Tackling Torture at the Top meetings and activities were models for me. Along with his compassionate anger, I remember his frequent laughter, too. Ji Jang Bo Sal.

The nicest guy I've met. Kept me sober just by writing down his phone number in my first Big Book. People who understand the program will understand me risking my anonimity. I remember the great laugh we had about how he sponsored me without knowing it. As we both moved free alcohol all around a table during a band break in his sons backyard. Thank Bob H you were a great example of 164 pages.

Bob exemplified the hard struggle for peace. He was usually soft-spoken, but very direct. You could have an extreme difference of opinion with him, but still be friends and working together on important issues.
