James Martin AMON Obituary
June 28, 1936 – March 23, 2018 Jim was born in St. Paul, Minnesota to Joseph P. Amon and Catherine (née Crowley) Amon. He attended St. Agnes Grade and High School. Jim then enrolled at the University of Minnesota, seeking a life goal. He also signed up for eight years in the Naval Air Reserve. About now Jim started dating Donna Hansen. Their first date was on the 4th of July 1955, the first day of a fulfilling, adventurous journey together for over 60 years. At St. Paul Fire and Marine as an underwriter, he began to seek a career path with his affinity to understand numbers and risk. Then after moving on to Sexton Insurance Agency, he left the University of Minnesota to study risk management at CPCU, "Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter," a professional society. He studied nights for 3-4 years while also starting a family. Working for CNA insurance in Minneapolis, he quickly started to move up with transfers to Seattle, then Chicago. His abilities were heard of in San Francisco, and he was hired by Guy Carpenter, a subsidiary of Marsh & McClennan. Jim's ability to meet people, his honesty, coupled with facts, brought him to be valued in markets for reinsurance treaties in Paris, Germany and London at Lloyd's of London. He retired as Executive Vice President from Guy Carpenter. In retirement he was an avid tennis player, loved skiing, dancing, travel and was the life of many large parties at home. The last ten years of his life, Jim began the slow decline from Alzheimers. The family is deeply grateful to the excellent caregivers that he had. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Donna, their five children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild; and his brother Robert and wife, Rose, and their children. Memorial and reception will be held at St. Hilary's Catholic Church, Tiburon, CA on April 12, 2018, at 11am. Donations can be made in his name to the Hospice by the Bay and Senior Access in Terra Linda (San Rafael).
