Jeanine HAWKINS Obituary
Of St. Paul Passed away peacefully at home with family on Thursday, May 17. Jeanine was born December 6, 1928, in Duluth to Patrick and Seretha Hobbins, and raised in Aitkin, Minn. She graduated from Aitkin High School, attended the College of St. Scholastica, and worked as a legal secretary in both Aitkin and Minneapolis before raising her family in White Bear Lake. She and her husband of 62 years, George, relocated to St. Paul in 1981 and were long-time members of Lumen Christi Catholic Community. Jeanine will be remembered as a devoted matriarch, modeling grace, strength and dignity for her growing family. She enjoyed spending time in beautiful spaces and with loved ones: in her home and gardens, on daily walks and over coffee; while cooking and hosting, shopping and gifting; playing thousands of hands of bridge; and maintaining old and new friendships. She was generous and tireless, giving time to the Lee and Rose Warner Nature Center, the Highland Park Women's Guild, and the Children's Hospital Association, and, at age 65, returning to work for Dayton's for five years. For these past 2½ years, Jeanine courageously endured pancreatic cancer treatment, facing the challenge "one day at a time" with her characteristic faith, optimism and gratitude. Preceded in death by her parents, sisters Bonny Montero and Nancy Cummings, brother Joseph Hobbins, and son Barry Hawkins. Survived by her husband George; sister Patty (Vernon) Nelson; brothers-in-law Jim Montero and Greg Cummings; and children Betsy (Dennis) Evans, Jane (John) Scherer, Sally Hawkins, Brian (Linda) Hawkins and Mark Hawkins. Beloved grandmother of Troy (Jenny), Ben (Erin), Megan (Rob), Liz (Nels), Kathryn (Kevin), Shannon (Andy), Spencer, Patrick, Brie and Matthew. "Grandma great" to Greta, Owen, Matilda, Amelia, Finn, Maura and Ingrid Jeanine. In addition, she was a cherished aunt, cousin and friend to many. Jeanine's strength and style leave a lasting impact on all who loved and were loved by her. She'll be forever remembered for her trademark orange, warmth and selflessness. Her family takes comfort in knowing the company she now keeps with the Lord, and especially with her son Barry. Visitation Tuesday, May 22, 4-8 PM, at O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home (575 S. Snelling Ave., St. Paul). Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, May 23, 10 AM, with visitation one hour prior, at Lumen Christi Catholic Community (2055 Bohland Avenue, St. Paul). Interment at Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights. Memorials preferred to Lumen Christi Catholic Community, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum or Little Sisters of the Poor.
