Michael GALVIN Obituary

Age 87 Passed away on September 21, 2017 in St. Paul, following a stroke on September 15, 2017. Preceded in death by parents Michael J. Galvin, Sr., and Margaret Galvin. Survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Frances Culligan Galvin, and 7 children: Sean Galvin (Mary Galvin), Kevin Galvin, (Cynthia Galvin), Kathleen Walker (Robert Walker), Nora Galvin (Jeani Pearson), Margaret Galvin, Mary Galvin (Mike Monroe) Tricia Mockenhaupt (Gus Mockenhaupt), and 13 grandchildren. Also survived by sisters Sheila Rangitsch and Mary Farrell. Mike's trademarks were his zest for life, his intelligence, his quick Irish wit, and his story telling. He took delight in his family, his many friends, and his law partners. He was born in Winona, Minnesota in 1930. He attended Cotter High and graduated from Cretin High School in 1948. He was deeply proud of his Winona heritage and returned frequently. He attended the 1947 World Boy Scout Jamboree in Paris, France, and tirelessly supported the North Star Council of the Boy Scouts as a life-long scout. Mike graduated from the College of St. Thomas in 1952. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force from 1952-1954, and was stationed in St. John's, Newfoundland. His stories of Newfoundland included claims that nothing surpassed "seal flipper stew" and that puffins tasted "like bald eagle." He graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1957 and joined Briggs and Morgan. Mike was very proud to have practiced with the firm for his entire 60 year career, and did so right up to his death. Mike was described as a "firm legend" and was celebrated by the Minnesota State Bar Association for his extraordinary contributions to the legal profession. With the firm's support, he was member and president of many social organizations and university boards, and received many awards. Having learned thrift from Mike, we note that our budget prohibits the listing of each such position and award. Visitation 4-8 p.m. Thursday September 28th at O'Halloran and Murphy (575 South Snelling Ave. 651-698-0796). Mass of Christian Burial, 10:30 a.m. Friday September 29 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church (515 Albert Street S, St. Paul) with visitation also one hour prior to Mass. Burial at Resurrection Cemetery following Mass. Memorials preferred to the North Star Council of the Boy Scouts of America or the University of St. Thomas.

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you! I was so fortunate to have been able to visit Uncle Mike and Aunt Frannie during the Labor Day weekend. He was so sharp and witty as we shared stories from the past. He was an amazing person who loved his family, profession and the city of St. Paul. Rest in Peace Uncle Mike!

As a young (back in the day) lawyer at Briggs & Morgan, I found Mike Galvin to be welcoming, supportive and an excellent role model, not only for young lawyers but for all who wanted to be a tribute to the firm, to the profession and most important, to the community. He lived a long, good, abundant and inspiring life. May his memory long thrive in how we strive to emulate him.

Holding Mickey's family in my praying heart and hands. I met each of you only a small handful of times over the years as I grew up in Des Moines and went to undergraduate college at College of Saint Teresa, Winona, Minnesota. The last time I saw Mickey and the family was for his 50th birthday and his father's (Mike senior) 80th birthday celebration.
May you delight in the many memories of the wonderful man Mickey was to all.
Blessings during this time of grief,
Kristin (Kris) Galvin
(Jack and Arlene Galvin's youngest
child)

My life is richer and much more interesting for all the adventures that started with "Galvin here" when I answered the phone.

My Mom and Dad thought so highly of the wonderful Mr. Galvin and that rubbed off on all of us kids. Big loss for St. Paul as he seem to embody all that is good in this community. Sending prayers to all of you.
Sincerely,
