Mary Horty Obituary

Horty, Mary Helen

A Renowned

Minnesota Artist

Passed away peacefully after a long illness with Alzheimer's on December 5, 2005. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; daughter, Claudia (Fred Searls); sons, Chris and Scott (Robin): grandchildren, Nicole (Ramiro de Acevedo Ramos) and Kessler; as well as Heather, Gwen and Hunter Fitzgerald and Brooke and Jason Hall. Mary Helen graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1943 with a degree in creative writing. In 1949, she began her artistic career in ceramics studying under Alex McKenzie. She moved onto weaving and then painting which she studied with Mac Le Sueur. In the 1960s, she began taking classes in collage with Hugh Kappel and found she loved this particular medium. Her collage work became focused on paper montage. She exhibited all through the Midwest and Eastern part of the U.S. and won numerous awards. Her pieces also hang in permanent museum and corporate collections. She will always live in our hearts as a truly remarkable and talented wife, mother, grandmother, friend and artist. A gathering for family and friends is planned for early February. Memorials to Alzheimer's Association of Minnesota, 4550 West 77th Street, Edina, MN 55435.

Dear Tom and Family,

Mary Helen's collages grace the 505 building with wit and whimsy. Although I didn't know her personally, I'm sure she was a wonderful wife and mother. Everyone at Semmer Group is sorry for your loss, and we send blessings for your healing. Her art will be a constant memory of her love for life.
