James M. CAMPBELL

Former Ramsey County Judge Age 67, of St. Paul Passed away peacefully on Feb 10, 2017, surrounded by family and friends. Jim was a graduate of St. Mark's, Cretin High ('67), Univ of St Thomas ('71) and William Mitchell Law School ('75). Jim joined the Attorney General's Staff under Warren Spannaus and worked for the State of MN as a prosecutor for several years. In 1988, he was appointed to the Ramsey County Bench by Governor Rudy Perpich and retired in 2002. In retirement, Jim discovered his entrepreneurial spirit and played a key role in developing The Makani Catamaran luxury sailing adventure business in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Makani has been featured in two episodes of "Hawaii Five-O" and "On the Road" with Jason Davis. Jim's passions included a love for political issues and the history of St. Paul. He will be remembered for his compassion, fairness and unique sense of humor. He was a believer in second chances. Jim had that special gift of being able to reach out, smile and connect with almost everyone he met. He was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Mary Ellen, brother, Tom, and father, Chuck. He is survived by nephews and nieces, Michelle (Ron) Wiederhoft, Michael (Chris), Karen, Kevin (Andrea), his dear Makani friends, including Tim Mardell, Mike & Theresa Lopez, Captain Jon Jepson, Yumi Arney, and Andy Dahl. Visitation will be Thursday, Feb 23 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at O'Halloran & Murphy Funeral Home (575 Snelling Ave S, St. Paul). Funeral Mass will be held Friday, Feb 24 at 10:00 AM with visitation one hour prior at Assumption Church (51 7th St W, downtown St. Paul).
