Sgt. Greg N. Riewer Obituary
Greg N. Riewer didn''t plan to volunteer for a tour of duty in Iraq. But he did after his brother told him he had signed up. "Since I was going, he didn''t want to miss out," said Andy Riewer. "People say I was Greg''s rock. I say we were kind of each other''s rock." Riewer, 30, of Frazee, Minn., died March 23 in Habbaniyah of wounds suffered from a roadside bomb. He was a 1997 graduate and was assigned to Bemidji. Andy Riewer said his brother had a reputation for being the kind of soldier who did the right thing, even when no one was watching. He had also served in Bosnia. "He always made me smile. I loved calling him Smiley," said his father, Richard. "Greg didn''t say much but would smile to let you know he loved you." Riewer loved baseball, basketball, football, riding his motorcycle and hunting with his family. "We always got a kick out of him when he would return to deer camp with his buck but not say anything about it until I asked hours later," said his father. "I will miss the sight of him returning at the end of the day in his blaze orange, oversized coveralls." He also is survived by his mother, Jan.
