Ruth H. Dugan

BEDFORD - Ruth Harder Dugan, 98, of Bedford and formerly of Hamburg, N.Y., died on July 4, 2012, after several years of failing health.

She was born Oct. 19, 1913, in Buffalo, N.Y., the youngest of five children of Cordelia Cousins Harder and Edwin Partridge Harder. She graduated from Lafayette High School in Buffalo, Cornell University in 1935, with a bachelor's of arts degree in economics and University of Buffalo in 1965, with a master's degree in early childhood education and taught preschool until her retirement.

She married William Dugan in 1937 and raised their five children, Molly Ayarza of Quito, Ecuador; Sam Dugan of Manchester; Patrick Dugan, Rancho Mirage, Calif.; Dixie Siegel of Lakewood, N.Y., and Dirk Dugan of Ithaca, N.Y., all of whom survive her. In addition she leaves 23 nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren and a growing number of great-grandchildren.

Ruth was at the center of her family, had a perfect disposition and a great love of children with whom she shared swimming, tennis, fishing, tractor rides, winter sports, a secret chocolate chip cookie recipe, and great empathy for all their trials.

She loved and was well loved by many adult friends and family as well, joining them for tennis, skiing, walking, theater, concerts and service organizations, the American Red Cross, League of Women Voters, and Tifft Nature Preserve in South Buffalo.

SERVICES: A memorial gathering in Hamburg, N.Y., is being planned for October.
