Richard Johnston Obituary

WINDHAM - Richard "Dick" Johnston, 83, died peacefully at Genesis in Lebanon, NH on June 3, 2018 with family around him. He was born September 8, 1934 to the late John and Genevieve Johnston of St. Johnsbury, VT.

His first job was delivering papers, and after graduation from St. Johnsbury Trade School. He worked full time for the Caledonian Record in St Johnsbury. His love of newspapers showed his whole life. All the grandkids knew to leave the papers around Bompa's chair alone. He was particularly fond of solving the daily Jumble.

After the Caledonian Record went on strike, he moved to Southern New Hampshire. He worked as a Linotype operator at Courier-Citizen in Lowell, Mass. and then later in Billerica. After those darn computers made his job obsolete, he finished his career at Kohlmans in Merrimack, NH.

Dick is survived by his daughter Darlene Rogers and her husband John of Paducah, KY, and daughter Dorene Carey and her husband Brett of South Royalton, VT. A brother, Robert Johnston and his wife Inez as well as his sister G. Paula Lewis also survive him, as well as six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 plus years, Doris Swett Johnston and brothers Stephen and Nathan Johnston.

SERVICES: There will be no service or calling hours per his request, but we ask friends and family to think of him fondly every time they are surfing TV channels and come across a car race or football game. An online guestbook is available to leave a message for Richard's family by visiting www.rickerfuneralhome.com.

Dear Darlene and Doreen,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I do remember your dad's passion for race car racing. He always was very happy and carried a wide smile on his face. Thinking of all of you during this time.

Our condolences to the family of Richard J. Johnston. I grew up a couple streets away from Dick's childhood home off Orchard St where my grandmother lived, and Dick also became my foreman of the linotype operations (he was so patient) at the Caledonian-Record where I worked for 5 years immediately after my high school graduation. My husband was in the National Guards with Dick out of the St Johnsbury Vermont Armory. My husband was also a 1955 classmate of Dick's wife, Doris, at the Danville High School, Danville, VT, and I worked at the F.W. Woolworth Co in St Johnsbury VT with Doris app. 1952.
Dick was adamant that he introduced my husband and I years ago (we will be married 55 years June 15, 2018), and always "kidded" us that he was the culprit (cupid) to blame. We enjoyed the annual 1955 get-togethers, with Dick and Doris and her 1955 classmates of Danville High School, at areas chosen by the class group, and always looked forward to seeing them. We will miss both Dick and Doris. There are wonderful memories to cherish.
