NEW LONDON - Barbara "Bobbie" Schaller Akin passed away on Friday, May 18, 2012, at the age of 84.

Born on July 2, 1927, in the borough of Manhattan, New York City, she grew up in Pelham Manor, N.Y. Following graduation from Pelham High School, she worked in New York City for the General Electric Corporation.

In 1948, she met John C. "Jack" Akin, a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy, on a blind date. They were married on June 4, 1950; had three children, and spent their 61 years together happily during Jack's military career in the U.S. Air Force and as an engineer at the Southern New England Telephone Company in New Haven, Conn.

Bobbie stood with and supported her husband at many Veterans Day services in New London. She loved children and animals, and brought a refreshing hilarity to her relationship with many friends over the years. She was totally devoted to the proper upbringing of her children; teaching them reverence for God in Sunday school; establishing in them a strong patriotism toward their country; serving as a Scout leader to instill a high standard of conduct in their daily life; encouraging their practical education so as to become trustworthy and independent citizens; and emphasizing their individual development.

She is survived by her husband, Jack; her son, David B. Akin and family of Fredericksburg, Va.; and daughters, Diana L. Akin of Tampa, Fla., and Debra A. Ludington of New London; with three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

services:A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, May 26, at the First Baptist Church in New London, to celebrate Bobbie's life.
