SUNCOOK - Ernest L. "Scout" Martel Jr., 77, died Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at his daughter's home in West Lebanon.

Born in Manchester on Sept. 5, 1935, Scout was the son of Ernest and Alphonsine (Blais) Martel Sr. He spent his early life in Suncook and lived for 46 years in San Diego, Calif. After his wife died in 2012, Scout's fondest wish was to return to his roots in New Hampshire.

He served with the U.S. Navy from 1953 until 1955.

Prior to his retirement, Mr. Martel had spent 30 years with Rohr Industries as a machinist. He loved being with his grandchildren and sorely missed his Springer Spaniel, Mandy. He enjoyed all sports, especially golf, tennis and baseball and, no matter where he lived, continued to be a die-hard Red Sox fan.

Mr. Martel was the widower of Irene (Plante) Martel, who died in 2012. He is survived by a son, Jay Martel of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Patricia Martel of West Lebanon; five grandchildren; a brother Chester Martel of Pembroke and nieces and nephews.
