Herman C. "Herk" Streitburger, of Bedford, NH, passed away peacefully from natural causes on May 29, 2020, at Mount Carmel Rehabilitation in Manchester, NH.

Almost 101 years old, he was born in Philadelphia, PA, on June 24, 1919, to Balbina and Herman A. Streitburger.

Herk was a U.S. Army Air Corps World War II veteran and served as a radio operator and gunner on a B24 Liberator Bomber. He was shot down on his 50th and final mission in Europe and spent a year in a German prison camp. Daringly, he was able to escape and return to Allied hands.

After returning from the War, he attended St. John's University in Brooklyn, NY through the GI bill. Shortly after, he met the love of his life, Jackie, on a blind date. Herk and Jackie raised four children on Long Island while he worked in Manhattan for Rheingold Brewery for 20 years. He and his family moved in 1967 to Bedford, where he expanded his marketing career at Silver Brothers. After retiring, he joined SCORE and was a mentor to small and new businesses for over 25 years.

Herk was an inspirational speaker at local schools and media outlets, talking about his POW experience and life lessons until he was 99. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion NH and the NH Ex-POW Chapter #1, Northeast POW/MIA Network, and joined the board of the Honor Flight New England after participating on the 2010 inaugural flight. Among many other honors, he was presented with the Boston Post Cane as Bedford's oldest resident in 2018.

Herk was known for his positive attitude and optimism about life. He had many admirable qualities including a great sense of humor, strong religious faith and a caring, generous spirit. He never missed a birthday, always sending a card or making a call.

He showed his generosity by donating to many local and national charities. He was also a devoted parishioner of Saint Elizabeth Seton in Bedford. Herk considered everyone at the Manchester Veterans Administration his lifeline and family.

Herk attributed his longevity to the love of his family and community. He said he considered his grandchildren and great-grandchildren "his treasures." He will be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and role model for all.

He was predeceased by his wife, Jacqueline.

"Pops" is survived by his four children, Jan Streitburger and John Consilvio of Arlington, MA, Kim Streitburger and Jim Thibeault of Stratham, NH, Guy Streitburger and Jennifer Lutzen of Bedford, NH and Ross and Mari Streitburger of Weare, NH; seven grandchildren, Guy, Jessica, Kyle, Lindsay, John, Julie and Chloe; four great grandchildren, Guy, Grey, Maya, and Oscar; and several nieces and nephews.

SERVICES: All services will be private to the family. A celebration of Herk's life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Herman's memory to: Honor Flight New England, PO Box 16287, Hooksett, NH 03106.

The family thanks the staff at Mount Carmel Rehabilitation for their dedicated care.

Lambert Funeral Home & Crematory, Manchester is assisting the family with arrangements. To leave a message of condolence, see the obituary at www.lambertfuneralhome.com

He was quite a man, honest, strong man. Always willing to help anyone, as he did for me. He and Mrs. Streitburger always, always had their door open for anyone. As one of their children's friends, I know this first hand. He was always friendly and kind. Truly a GREAT man. Not all good die young! Proven by his 100 years. I grieve for all the Streitburgers it is hard when you loose a parent. He had quite a life, World War II Veteran, prisoner of war. A true Hero! I'm proud to have known him. During these tough times it is comforting to have someone to look up to, especially someone you knew first hand. I'm proud to say I knew him.
God bless. Rest In Peace.
Sincerely,

It has been 15 years since Herk advised me as part of SCORE. Yet he had such an impact from those few brief interactions, that I consider him to be part of my company. He was so caring, generous, encouraging and even enthusiastic, that I felt incredibly supported and kept taking the needed steps. I am so sorry for everyone's loss, yet also know that he continues to live within so many of us.

My life is forever changed because of my friendship with "Herk". His smile and positive attitude were infectious. That's why God gave him soo many years of life on earth. It was his mission, every day, to spread his brand of sunshine to as many people as he came in contact with - like me, on soo many occasions. I will miss him, but am comforted by knowing I was one of the lucky ones for having him as a friend. Rest peacefully Herk, you have earned it many times over.

Jan and Kim and to the entire Streitburger family, my sincere condolences. I had the pleasure of meeting your Dad, Herk when he joined Sue Stretch and I as our plus one to a Made in NH harvest dinner. We were graced with his stories on the ride back and forth to Concord. It was so apparent that he loved life and shared it with many that evening. He marvelled at all the great foods that came from the growers and artisans in NH. One night many years ago, special and imprinted in memory. What a beautiful spark that lives within all of you!

You didn't have to!
15 years ago we met in my hometown, I was your personal translator for three whole amazing days. You and your fellow friends taught me history like no one else - You didn't have to.
When you went back home we started writing letters and telling each other stories, you kindly asked me if I wanted to received the TIME magazine as a thank you token for my three day 'job' - You didn't have to.
When I moved to the UK, you took time and effort to make sure the TIME magazine reaches me there so I can still enjoy a good read - You didn't have to.
You have invited me over to New Hampshire and have been my host for weeks, making sure I do meet all of your amazing family including Jan Streitburger, Kim Streitburger, Lindsay Thibeault, Julie Thibeault and many many more. Took me for trips, our daily meetings at Dunkin' Donuts to hear more war stories from your veteran friends. I still remember you prepping up an Old Fashioned on one of those evenings we spent talking and telling stories. It was an amazing holiday I could not have dreamt of - You didn't have to.
When my son was born, not only you sent us a beautiful poem about a Son, but also added a blanket and few little clothes - You didn't have to.
We kept emailing and calling each other, hearing all the stories and just keeping in touch... You didn't have to.
You didn't have to but you did ... like a true Friend. The best Yankee Friend you can ask for.
I do have a big void in my heart but my mind is filled with all those amazing memories I will cherish.
Goodbye my Yankee Friend
God bless

I met uncle Herk when I was about 5. He came by to pick up aunt Jackie, so we could all meet him. I remember because he was the tallest person I'd seen. They married and bought a house in Wantagh. He worked in the city and for years would take grandma to the city so she could window shop. I was in the sixth grade and he and aunt Jackie took care of me while they went on vacation. He wood drop me off in Valley Stream so I could go to school. In the early 80's I met him in New Mexico to attend a reunion of his war buddies. I saw how much he was licked and, most of all, respected by those men. He was the best father, husband, provider and classiest man I've ever met. Say hello to aunt Jackie.

Legend of a man. Was nothing but a positive force, for the 35 years I knew him. He was 65, when I moved in. I was the kid next door, and he was always kind, and a pleasure to talk too. I would do odd jobs for him, he let me play basketball in his driveway with my friends. I was lucky to be there for his 100th birthday party, and see how many people loved him. Rest in peace, Herk. A life well lived, and will be well remembered. All the Streitburgers are in family's thoughts.
