KINGSTON - Joseph P. "Joe" Silva, 60, died Feb. 15, 2013, at his home in Kingston, after a valiant battle against cancer, surrounded by his family.

He was born Jan. 3, 1953, in New Britain, Conn., son of the late Charles Silva and Marion (Williams) Bell.

Joe grew up in upstate New York and graduated from LaFargeville High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a crew chief on KC-135s. In 1987, Joe married Cheryl Venner, and they settled in Kingston to raise their family. He worked as an industrial maintenance mechanic for several years.

Joe was known for his great sense of humor and his willingness to help everyone. He approached life with a never-fail attitude. Joe was an all around handy person who enjoyed sharing his abilities to help his family and friends. He was a mechanical genius often repairing cars and small engines in what many referred to as "Joe's Garage." He was also skilled in the field of carpentry. He was an avid sports fan, who never missed a Red Sox or Patriots' game. He loved spending time with Jessie, his beloved dog, just watching the birds feed outside his family room windows. The most important things to Joe were his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl Silva of Kingston; his son, Anthony Silva of Kingston; his daughter and son-in-law, Samantha and Jeff Mulcahy of Lewes, Del.; three grandsons, Jake, Drew and Luke; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Dori Silva of Richland, N.Y., John Silva of Saranac Lake, N.Y., Jim and Lorraine Silva of Lawrence, Mass., Dave and Jeannette Silva of Pelham; his sister, Jeanne Baker of Oswego, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
