Richard "Dickie" Purington Sr., 73, of Somersworth, died Friday, March 2, 2018 at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital after befriending all staff he came in contact with there. When he wasn't serenading the nurses, he was requesting better coffee. He tried his best to get discharged so he could get in his truck to go visiting, but he was called home, surrounded by family and friends.
Dickie is survived by his wife, Mary Purington; his sisters Amanda Robertson and her husband Lawrence, Arvella Grover and her partner William; his children Annemarie Byron and her partner Nick, Richard Purington Jr. and his wife Kathy, Dean Purington and his wife Carin, John Purington, and Holly Purington; by his stepchildren Jennifer Kelley, James Hanscome, and Jillian Dubois; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is predeceased by his parents Bud and Pearl Purington and his brother James Purington.
Dickie served in the Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member and officer at the American Legion Post 8 in Dover, N.H., where he was loved by all that met him. All who knew him knew his love of country music, and he frequently made requests. Dickie will be missed by all who knew him.
