HAMPTON - Wallace A. Shaw, Sr., 90, of Hampton, passed away suddenly on Sunday, January 28, 2018 at the family homestead in Hampton.

Wally was born in Newburyport, MA on November 2, 1927, a son of the late Harold D. and Beatrice (Batchelder) Shaw.

Wally was raised in Hampton and attended Hampton Academy. A proud veteran, he served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. After leaving the Marines he worked for the Town of Hampton, Simplex and in 1966, founded Tidewater Campground with his father. The campground and family homestead, established in 1638, has been home to the Shaw family for 14 generations. Wally had managed the campground with his family up to the time of his death.

He was a quiet, hard-working man who made daily work his passion. Not one to sit idle, Wally was the consummate handyman, always repairing and building things around the campground and was at his happiest when working. He was known and respected for his direct no nonsense approach to life and his unmatched work ethic. A great story teller, he touched many lives in his 52 years of running the campground (walking speed only!). A fantastic husband, father and grandfather, Wally loved his family above all else and he cherished time spent with his children and grandchildren. He was generous and kind and would give whatever he could to help his family and friends. In his younger days, he enjoyed snowmobiling and ice fishing up at Great Bay with his friends.

Wally is survived by his wife, Theresa Battis Shaw of Hampton and Salem, his sons, Wallace ""Lee"" Shaw and his wife Lisa and William Shaw, both of Hampton, his daughter, Penny McGowen and her husband, Russ of Raymond, his stepson, Scott Battis and his wife Allison of Atkinson and his sisters, Isabel Amazeen of ME and Barbara Belcher of FL. He also leaves his grandchildren, Jeremy, Spencer, Caleb and Kasey Shaw, twins Justin and Joshua McGowen, Sydney Lee Battis and Amanda White, his step granddaughter Tonia Schmidt, his great grandson, Gage White and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Wally was predeceased by his first wife, E. Janet (Weir), his daughter, Laurie Shaw Schmidt, his step grandson, Bobby Schmidt, his great grandson Ethan White and his brothers, Roger and Elmer Shaw.
