UTICA, NY - Mrs. Ann (Emma) LaPorte, a longtime resident of Conkling Ave., passed away peacefully, at the age of 102, at the Magnolia House of the Sitrin H.C.C., on Saturday, September 1, 2018.
Ann was born in Utica on January 31, 1916, the 2nd youngest of seven children to Francesco and Maria Giuseppa (Ambroselli) Zegarelli. She was educated in local schools and a 1934 graduate of Utica Free Academy. Ann was a legal secretary at the Frank Pratt Law Firm and later the Fowler and Kowalczyk Law Firm, where she worked with her lifelong friend, Victoria Bek. She later retired from Oneida County Social Services.
On January 13, 1945, Ann was joined in marriage to Anthony J. "Tony" LaPorte, a longtime Utica firefighter. Ann and Tony shared over fifty-six loving years together until he passed away on November 2, 2001.
An avid reader, Ann read several books weekly for most of her life. She was an accomplished pinochle player and always enjoyed weekly pinochle games with friends. In earlier years, Ann and Tony loved to go to Saratoga and the Fingerlakes' Race tracks to watch thoroughbred racing. She was an excellent cook who loved to bake for her family and friends. Her most loved role in life, along with Tony, was playing an important part in her grandchildren's life, and she spent most everyday with them.
Ann is survived by her devoted son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Deirdre LaPorte, of Sauquoit; two adored grandchildren, Amanda LaPorte and Anthony LaPorte; and also many beloved nephews and nieces and their families. She was predeceased by five brothers, Louie, John L., Michael, Dr. Edward and Marco Zegarelli; one sister, Lillian Stivali; and her best friend, Victoria Bek.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from The Matt Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary of Mt. Carmel/Blessed Sacrament Parish. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call on Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at The Matt Funeral Home, 700 Rutger St., at Mohawk St., Utica.
The family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of the Magnolia House for the loving and compassionate care shown to Ann during her stay there. Also, special mention of her in home caregivers, Nadia and Selena Sokol, along with Dina and Adilisa, for their special and loving care.
