Florence Jill Thorp, age 39, from Baltimore, MD, passed away early October 3, 2011, at the home of her parents on Bleeker Road, Vernon Center, NY. Florence Jill was born on October 28, 1971, in Oneida City Hospital, the daughter of Douglas D., Sr., and Shirley Clinch Thorp. She attended Vernon Verona Sherrill School and graduated in June 1989. She later went on to graduate from Hartwick College, Oneonta, with a Bachelors Degree in Art History in 1993 and, in 2000, Florence Jill received her Masters Degree in Library Science from Syracuse University. At the time of her passing, she was the Director of Decker Library at MICA. Florence Jill was a gifted artist who enjoyed drawing and painting. She was of the Methodist faith. Florence Jill leaves her parents, Douglas, Sr., and Shirley Clinch Thorp, of Vernon Center; two brothers and two sisters-in-law, Douglas and Karen Thorp, of Oneida, and Ronald and Susan Thorp, of Parrish; two nephews, Andrew Thorp and Brian Thorp (Florence Jill's Godson), both of Parrish; and one niece, Megan Elizabeth Thorp, of Oneida. Also surviving are four uncles, Howard and Evelyn Clinch and Donald and Doris Clinch, all of Vernon Center, Ronald Clinch, of Auburn, and Russell Thorp, of Vernon; one great-aunt, Mary Clinch, of Vernon Center; and several cousins. Florence will also be missed by her many friends and neighbors on Dellwood Ave. in Baltimore and her many co-workers and friends at MICA. Family and friends are invited to call on Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Malecki Funeral Home, Inc., 23 Front Street, Vernon, NY. Florence Jill's funeral service will be held immediately following calling hours at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Frank Loan officiating. Burial will follow in Vernon Center Cemetery, College Hill Rd., Vernon Center, NY. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Central Oneida County Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Inc., 7489 E. South Street, Clark Mills, NY 13321 or the Vernon Center Cemetery, c/o Dorothy Sheldon, 3693 Potash Hill Rd., Vernon Center, NY 13477. Florence Jill was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on May 11, 2010. She fought this horrible disease with the help of Dr. Naimish Pandya and his staff at the University of Maryland Greenebaum Cancer Center in Baltimore, MD.

I am so sorry to hear such sad news and my heart and prayers go out to the whole family. It was indeed a pleasure to watch Jill grow up and work with her mom Shirley. Those days were great, it was like we were all one big family keeping up with new and exciting news from college to first jobs and more. A bright star here on earth will now shine down on all of you. Love and prayers to you all, Cleveland.

Dearest Thorps,
My love goes out to you and yours particularly. As a faculty member at MICA, I can assure you that her cheery morning welcome was all that got me upstairs some days. A consummate professional, Florence strived to make things better for all around her. She will be missed.

Florence was a very kind, friendly person -- always with a smile on her face. Even with her illness she was a bright light and happy to see you here at MICA. I am sorry she left this place so young.

Florence was a great neighbor and friend. I was lucky to share the very thin wall of a house with her. The relaxing days and nights on our back porches will be remembered fondly and sorely missed. I miss her already.
