NEW HARTFORD - Leo E. Buttimer, 89, of New Hartford, passed away unexpectedly at home on September 2, 2018.
Leo was born on October 5, 1928 in Troy, NY, to Frank L. Buttimer and Leona L. Pfeiffer. Leo was raised and educated in Utica, NY and was a graduate of Utica Free Academy in 1946. Following graduation, Leo proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1950-54 in England.
Leo married Ellen T. Nolan on September 27, 1951 and together they had six children: Carol A. Schrader (Paul), Andover, MA, MaryLee Morrell (Jim), Saratoga Springs, NY, Joan Evans (Stu),Whitesboro, NY, Nancy Babrowicz (Walter), Utica, NY, Maureen Szamrej (Mark), Westford, MA and Ann (Betsy) Peckham (David) of Rome, NY. Leo is also survived by his beloved grandchildren: Matthew, Laura, Paul, Jimmy, Kate, Brian, Sean, Julie, Ben, Bobby, Melissa, Nicole, Michael, Abigail and Molly. He also leaves many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by two brothers, Robert and James Buttimer; and his parents; Frank and Leona Buttimer.
Leo was employed by Niagara Mohawk Power Corp. in the sales department. He enjoyed travelling to various rural areas assisting farmers with their electrical needs.
Leo enjoyed carpentry and always had a project going. He loved antiques and he spent many years in the Adirondacks and Florida.
Leo was a parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford.
Funeral services will be held Friday, September 7, 2018, at 10:00 AM at St. John the Evangelist Church, New Hartford, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by his cousin, Fr. J. Patrick Quinn. Calling hours are Thursday, September 6, 2018, from 4-6 PM at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
