Mae Helene (Poppie) Kubis Obituary
Mae Helene (Poppie) Kubis 1933 - 2018
BARNEVELD - It is with great sadness that the family of Mae Helene (Poppie) Kubis announce her passing. She left us on Friday, August 31, 2018, after a brief illness.
Poppie was born in Port Washington, NY, on August 3, 1933. Her family moved to Cherry Valley, NY, where she met her husband of over 50 years, Joe Kubis, a sergeant in the Marine Corps. They were married in 1954, raising a family of five children, first in Utica and then Barneveld, NY. After raising her own children, she was delighted to become the grandmother of three.
Poppie has always been a creative person. As a young mother, she created one of a kind cakes for her children's birthdays and made doll clothes from fabric scraps. She loved to cook and shared her delicious food with family and friends. Her home in Barneveld boasted a beautiful, natural style flower garden that was a tribute to her green thumb! Throughout her life, Poppie was always at work on some creative project.
It is in art that Poppie found her calling. While still living in Utica, she took ceramics classes. Her pieces were an early indication of her talent as an artist and are cherished by her family. After moving to Barneveld, Poppie took oil painting classes and began a life-long journey as an artist. In addition to creating her own paintings, she taught art classes to students in her studio at home, as well as through local libraries and community education. Her work was displayed at both juried and non-juried art shows, as well as solo exhibitions, including one at the Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute. Poppie painted in oils, acrylic and watercolors. She is probably best known for her beautiful florals.
Poppie was an active, independent person. Her three granddaughters were a great joy to her. She was close with her family, all of whom spent time with her during her illness. In addition to her family and art, Poppie had many interests. She read, did crossword puzzles, and spent time with friends. She belonged to bridge groups, playing several times a week.
Poppie was predeceased by her husband, Joseph A. Kubis. She will be lovingly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Lynne Kubis, Joanne Beardslee (Leslie), Sharon Naughton (Thomas), Alan Kubis (Melissa Hingstrom) and Richard Kubis (Tracey), and her three cherished granddaughters, Kelsey Naughton (Tyler Reynolds), Brittany Naughton and Elizabeth Beardslee. Her family is profoundly grateful to the many friends and neighbors who shared Poppie's life and helped her in times of need, especially her dear friend, Barbara Redmond.
Calling hours will be on Saturday, September 8, 2018, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a short service, at Ackley-Mills Funeral Home, 9597 Main Street, Remsen, NY 13438. A private burial will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
