Mr. Frederick "Fred" Giles Siegenthaler, age 83, passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013, in the comfort of his home, with his adoring family by his side. His family invites all who would celebrate his life to do so by hugging a child, helping someone less fortunate, or by simply remembering to laugh and share a smile with others -- even when the going gets tough. Fred was born in Utica on November 21, 1929, and was the son of the late Fred and Alice Siegenthaler. Raised and educated locally, he graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1947 and NYS Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences in 1949. Fred later attended Union University - Albany College of Pharmacy, graduating in 1957. In the interim, he proudly served as a member of the United States Army Medical Corps (1951-1953); this experience greatly influenced his decision to pursue a degree in pharmacy. On November 19, 1955, Fred married the love of his life, Rosella "Rosie" (Frank) with whom he had eight children and many fulfilling years of marriage. Fred began his professional career as a Pharmacist, working for Randall's Pharmacy where his positive attitude and ever-present smile made him a favorite with customers. He later worked for Emdin's and filled in at other local pharmacies where he enjoyed interacting with and helping customers. Fred had the gift of appreciation and found much joy in the simple things in life, like spending time with his large family and friends. When his children were growing up, he was very active in the Boy Scouts of America, along with the rest of his family, and loved coaching Little League baseball. He enjoyed attending as many of his grandchildren's activities and events as possible, always eager to capture the memories on film. A man of strong faith, Fred was a member of the Knights of Columbus (4th Degree) and a long time parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, Usher and member of the Men's Club. Fred was also a Charter Member of Perpetual Adoration at St. Joseph and St. Patrick's Church and always willing to fill in whenever needed day or night. He was a member of the Pharmacy Society of the State of New York as well as a past member and Treasurer of the Mohawk Valley Pharmaceutical Society. Fred's patriotism and love for his country was of particular note. While working with the local AARP Chapter 2012, Fred completed a project that created a permanent recording of many local veterans' experiences so that these could be documented in a national register. Fred was also a 20 year volunteer with the Utica Boilermaker. He will also be remembered for his enthusiastic support of the NY Mets, Giants and SU Basketball. Fred is survived by his wife, Rosella; his children, Kathy and Doug Holzhauer, of Whitesboro, Terri and John Waldron, of Sherrill, Chris and John Mario, of Collegeville, PA, Mary Alice Boak, of Marcy, Fred and Anita Siegenthaler, of Forest, VA, Richard and Olga Siegenthaler, of Tampa, FL, Sharon and Brian Smith, of Marcy, NY, and Bill and Jill Siegenthaler, of Frankfort; two brothers, David, of New York Mills, Robert, of Incline Village (Lake Tahoe), NV; his sister-in-law, Betty Frank, of Utica, and brother-in-law, Dr. William Frank, of Lawrenceville, GA; his grandchildren, Nathan and Jody Holzhauer, Mary Therese Holzhauer, Karen (Waldron) and Brent Potts, Laura and Nicole "Jenny" Waldron, Katie and Nicole Trainor (Mario) and Bennett and Vaughn Mario, Danny Boak, Gabriel and Autumn Siegenthaler, Bianca and Remo Siegenthaler, Kristen, Brian and Amanda Smith, and Walter and Julia Siegenthaler; two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Benjamin Holzhauer; his nieces, Anne Sturbin, Julie Siegenthaler, Anne Lucado and Heidi Chew; his nephews, Charles and Greg Frank; many cousins; and numerous good friends and neighbors as well as his good friends, Bill Hotaling and Dennis Thompson. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by his brother, Donald; sisters-in-law, Mary and Eleanor Frank and Marjorie Siegenthaler; and son-in-law, Michael Boak. The family wishes to extend sincere thanks for the great care and compassion provided by the Interventional Radiology team and wonderful staff at Faxton St. Luke's, his care team at Faxton Regional Cancer Center and all his doctors, nurses and personal caregivers, especially to Robin, Darlene, Steven, Taylor and Mo who always made him smile. Fred's Funeral Mass and Celebration of Life will commence on Friday morning, May 24, 2013, at 10:15 a.m. from the Heintz Funeral Home, 1517 Whitesboro Street, Utica, and at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Rev. Joseph Salerno. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow graveside at St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday evening (tonight) from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
