ZACHARIAS, FRED C. Fred C. Zacharias, Herzog Research Professor at the University of San Diego Law School, passed away Sunday, November 8, 2009, following a protracted battle with esophageal cancer, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 56 years old. Fred was one of the country's most noted and prolific scholars on matters of the law profession's ethics, focusing on diverse issues such as prosecutorial ethics, attorney-client confidentiality, ethics code drafting, judicial regulation of lawyers, and the role of advocates in the American legal system. He believed that lawyers have ethical roles beyond their duty to advance their clients' interests, that in addition, they have countervailing obligations to the courts, the legal system, third parties, society as a whole, and general morality. Fred was a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and Yale Law School; before becoming a Law Professor at Cornell in 1983, he served as a public interest lawyer in Washington, D.C. He moved to the University of San Diego, School of Law in 1990. He was a member of the American Law Institute, a former chair of the AALS Section of Professional Responsibility and the Section on Scholarship, and has been an active member of various organizations relating to lawyers' professional ethics. His philanthropic work included support for the San Diego Shelter for Homeless Teenagers (SDYCA) and as a long-term advisor to the Legal Ethics Committee of the San Diego County Bar. Fred is survived by his loving wife, Sharon Soroko Zacharias, sons Blake and Eric, mother Laure, and brother Lawrence, brother-in- law Richard Soroko, sisters-in-law Cathy Schoen and Sherry Schoenberg, a nephew Josh and a niece Alix. He will be remembered above all as a warm, loving and humorous family man, a cherished colleague, and a man of the highest principles. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Fred's name to a favorite charity of choice. Funeral services on Thursday, November 12th, at 12 noon at El Camino Memorial Park, 5600 Carroll Canyon Road, San Diego, CA 92121. Funeral arrangements by Am Israel Mortuary 619 583-8850
