David Ware Obituary

TOANO - David Warren Ware, Jr. , 68, of Yorktown, died tragically Friday, December 19, near his home. He was born in Williamsburg, May 20, 1946 to David W. (deceased) and Martha Millner Ware and moved to Toano at age 1. He attended Toano School, moving on to Matthew Whaley, and James Blair High School. He graduated from Christ Church Episcopal Boys School, and then the College of William and Mary. He was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity, where he was quite the life of the party. He served as an infantry Lieutenant in the US Army, 1968-1972 graduating from OCS at Fort Benning, GA, and was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ and Watertown, NY. Through his sister, Martha, he met his first wife, Chase Ware. Together they had 2 daughters, Katharine Stafford Ware Gregory, and Amanda Chase Ware Kizer. His second and present wife of 24 years, Sherron Ware, brought the addition of her son, Shane Hatchell, to his family. Over the course of his life, David operated the True Value Hardware Store, was general manager of the family shopping center, Colonial Towne Plaza, owned a roll off container business, and a construction company. He served on the James City County Board of Supervisors, representing Stonehouse District, 1977-79. David was enjoying his "semi-retirement" from "real jobs" when his life was heartbreakingly cut short. He spent his days fishing, planting tomatoes and watermelons, raising chickens, and gathering eggs. He was known for his "famous" BBQ-providing the meals for churches, condo parties, charities, or anybody who just happened to stop by to say hello-They usually left with not only BBQ, but eggs, watermelons, fish, tomatoes, or whatever was thriving at his place that day. David was a very gifted pianist and would often treat visitors to rousing renditions at the piano. He and Sherron were also quite the ballroom dancers. His absolute favorite activity was playing with and entertaining his grandchildren, Alex, Ian, Lily, and Theodore, (David called him, "The Beav"). He was always in his work van on his way to help somebody-to rebuild something, to repair something, to feed or to comfort somebody-and always, most assuredly, to entertain whomever he met by regaling one of his many, many hilarious, real life adventures. Even if they weren't hilarious, David would work it in such a way that they were. You were usually guaranteed a good laugh by the time you left David. He belonged to many organizations. He was not just a member in name only, but a full participating member-rolling up his sleeves and jumping in to make whatever organization a better place-always recruiting a crowd to accompany him to meetings. He belonged to the Jamestowne Society, the Mayflower Society, the Huguenot Society, the Society of the Cincinnati, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Military Order of the Stars and Bars, the Society of Colonial Wars in the State of VA, the Sons of the Revolution, and the Sons of Confederate Veterans--where he was instrumental in founding the 5th VA Cavalry chapter in James City County. David had just had his grandson Alex inducted as one of the youngest members ever. He was also very active in Operation Smile, and Hickory Neck Church. David also belonged to PeCK, a chicken owners association. David is survived by his wife, Sherron, his daughters : Kate Gregory and Amanda Kizer, his son, Shane Hatchell, grandchildren: Alex and Ian Gregory, Lily and Theodore "The Beav" Kizer, Amanda Gregory and Tristan Hatchell, and his sons-in-law: Thorpe Gregory and Steve Kizer. He is also survived by his mother, Martha "Sug" Ware, his brother, W. Walker Ware IV, his sisters, Martha Ware Petro and Mary Ware, and his brother-in-law, Joe Petro. He also had many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. David was baptised at Hickory Neck Church at the beginning of his life's journey, and his memorial service will be held there to commemorate the completion of his life's journey--New Year's Day at 11:00. Reception to follow at church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in David's memory to Hickory Neck Episcopal Church, 8300 Richmond Road, Toano 23168, or Operation Smile, 3641 Faculty Blvd., Va Beach 23453

Even though it has been almost ten years since you passed, you came to my mind today. Thank you for being a great example to me when I moved to VA back in 1997. I always appreciated and enjoyed your words of wisdom and the encouragement you offered to me at a time when I was young and struggling. Many people miss you and still speak of you with fond memories.

Dear Kate and Amanda,
Your father was so loved and admired - and will forever be missed. I miss his humor, his ability to provide great advice (whether asked for - or not - lol), and his general wealth of information. I lovingly referred to my dear friend as the 'Knower of All Things'. I love you both, Cindy Martin

Dave was much more than a fraternity brother, much more than a friend. Seven years after his sudden passing, he remains deeply missed and always remembered for his kindness, generosity, loyalty, selflessness, resourcefulness, and unbelievable good humor. Truly one of a kind, Dave was always there for others. We were honored to be his friend. It remains very difficult to comprehend he has left us on earth for a higher calling; but he will always be with us in spirit. We continue to think of Dave, the many good times, and what he meant to so many. Love, Jeff & Wendy Steinhoff

I didn't know David but I knew his daughters when we were young. Kate, Amanda, it has been many many years since we last saw each other but Vonnie told me about your Dad (I hear about it on the news but didn't put it all together) on Christmas. My thoughts are with you both.

With profound sorrow and sadness, the Ware family has our deepest and heartfelt sympathy. Dave was much more than a fraternity brother, much more than a friend. He will be deeply missed and always remembered for his kindness, generosity, loyalty, selflessness, resourcefulness, and unbelievable good humor. Dave was truly one of a kind.

We fondly reflect on the many, many, many, many great times (and escapades). There remain many stories to tell, and we will continue to cherish those fond memories, whether at the fraternity house, on a road trip, during one of Dave's continuous study breaks at William & Mary, at our wedding, or at Fred's Inn were we always dined on fine cuisine.

The 50 years of remembrances will always be with us. Dave was always there for others. We were honored to be his friend. It remains very difficult to comprehend he has left us on earth for a higher calling; but he will always be with us in spirit.

Dave's family is in our hearts and prayers. We continue to think of Dave, the many good times, and what he meant to so many. God bless as we celebrated Dave's life earlier today – a life very well lived, by a man who made a big difference in the lives of others and will be sorely missed and always remembered.

David was a new gardening friend of mine. He generously shared his methods, ideas, seeds, produce, and pictures of his gardens with me. We both shared the same ideas of wanting to grow our foods as organically as possible; both saying that if the bugs wouldn't want to eat it then why would we put it in our bodies.

I have spent my morning rereading all of emails and relooking at all the photos he shared with me. I am still in shock.

My heart goes out to his family; what a big loss for your family. Please know that I am so very sorry for your loss.

David will be missed. I am already feeling the void in my life.

When I reflect on my adult life I can't help but remember, with gratitude, the impact that my dear friend David had in my growth as a person. Kind, compassionate, humorous, humble, devoted to his family and friends, intelligent, spiritual, God-loving, lover of life, epic story and joke teller, hardworking, and talented - I will miss every single thing about you sweet friend! You had a special knack for pointing out the not-so-obvious 'obvious' and in sharing your thoughts with those you loved. We were so oh, so fortunate to have been graced with your presence in our lives. As we mourn your loss, we will also celebrate your life. You are a well-loved man, David Ware! Rest in peace, dear friend.

Shakespeare might have been thinking of David Ware when he wrote "his life was gentle and the elements so mixed in him that nature might stand up and say to all the world 'this was a man'." David Ware was friend and family -- the likes of him won't come again for a long time.

I met David 17 years ago when I heard him speak in front of a group of people. That day changed my life and saved it as well.David was very opinionated and most of the time after listening to him awhile he could convince you he was right, he was so knowledgeable on practically ever subject. I learned so much fro him, on gardening, building, history, helping other people and spirituality. He had a great outlook on life and enjoyed it.He was a person I really looked up to and I will surely miss him. My deepest sympathy to Sherron and the family

David was everything and more than what this beautifully written obituary shared. I met David first through our Operation Smile volunteer efforts and David was truly a "make it happen" kind of person. Then we discovered that we both were to be inducted into The Jamestowne Society on the same day, what a hoot, we laughed and cut up, like kids, when it came time for the picture memorializing this event was taken. I had the privilege of meeting David's mother, wife, sister, and brother during some of these activities. What great folks they all are. David enjoyed life so much, he was bigger than life. It is a heartbreaking and unimaginable tragedy,. May the many, many, happy, funny, loving, memories sustain you all and serve to lift you up during this time of sorrow and loss. May the Holy Spirit surround you and give you comfort. David is now in the arms of heaven far away from our eyes, but his humor, positive attitude, enthusiasm for life will linger with us. Prayers for all who were so fortunate to have known this wonderful, caring, honorable, patriotic man. Bonnie and Alley
