Leslie Harrison Smith Obituary
Leslie Harrison Smith passed away March 5, 2013, at his home in Williamsburg. The son of the late Leslie Smith Sr. and Carolyn Wheeler Smith, he was born in Birmingham, Ala., on March 20, 1935.
He served in the Army from 1957 to 1960 in the Tidewater area of Virginia. He graduated from the University of Alabama in 1962 with a bachelor of science in commerce and business administration. Afterward he joined Druid City Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Ala. There, Mr. Smith was the designer of the first inpatient computer program for use in hospitals and marketed nationally by IBM in the 1970s. He retired in 1992 from Druid City Hospital after 31 years of service.
After moving to Williamsburg in 1994, he served on the vestry at both St. Matthews Anglican Catholic Church in Newport News and St. Marks Anglican Catholic Church in Williamsburg. He was a long-time volunteer at Colonial Williamsburg giving garden tours as a master gardener. He was also an avid woodworker.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lucy Tylee Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth A Smith, whom he married in 1955. He is also survived by his brother, Wheeler Smith, and his wife, Lynn, of Birmingham, Ala; his daughter, Elizabeth Liles of Charlotte, N.C.; grandson, Thomas Harrison Smitherman and wife, Valerie, of Bergen, Norway; granddaughter, Lucy Tylee Goble and husband, Justin, of Durham, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home Thursday, March 7, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Marks Anglican Catholic Church, 1761 Jamestown Rd., Williamsburg VA 23185.
