Matthew James "Cotton" Wooten, Jr., 81, of Lanexa, Va. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family after a short illness Sunday, January 17, 2021. Cotton was born in Camden County, North Carolina. He retired after 24 years with the post office in Walkerton, Va. Cotton enjoyed square dancing, canoeing, traveling, and spending time with his friends and family at all of the Wooten family functions. Cotton was preceded in death by his parents, Matthew and Hazel Wooten; two brothers, Ricky and James Adam Wooten; five sisters, Vernie Belue, Jewel Whitehurst, Juanita Galloway, Vickie Galloway, and Janet Allen; grandson, Matthew Clay Galloway. Cotton is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Anne Wooten; three daughters, Lisa Galloway, Denise Johnson (Jim), Terri Harris (Allen); three sons, Ray Wooten (Stacy), Troy Wooten, Ronnie Smith (Sheryl); one brother, John "Stack" Wooten (Doris Ann); four sisters, Charlotte Ann Carneal (Harold), Barbara Jean Deskins, Ruby Newbill (Monty), Linda Dickens (Albert); nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A walk-through visitation will be held 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Vincent Funeral Home, 9923 Pocahontas Trail, Providence Forge, VA 23140. Please observe all Covid-19 restrictions, such as wearing a mask and social distancing. A private family service will be held later. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the James City-Bruton Volunteer Fire Department: 3135 Forge Rd. Toano, Va. 23168. Tributes may be posted at www.vincentfh.com.
