Wilfred Alan Bacchus Obituary
Wilfred Alan Bacchus passed away peacefully on December 9, 2012, the 86th anniversary of his birth. Bill was a dedicated and caring father, grandfather, brother, son, and, most of all, husband to his love of nearly sixty years, Marilyn Lyons Bacchus, who passed from this world December 10, 2011. Raised along with four sisters and two brothers by Ethel and James Bacchus on a humble farm in Alexandria, Minnesota, Bill went on to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1949. After serving on an amphibious ship during the Korean War, he spent most of his navy career in the submarine service on the Pacific, including command of the U.S.S. Spot. His final active service was at the Naval War College in Newport, RI, where he served on the faculty before retiring in 1969 to pursue a career in academia. A special interest in Latin American Studies led him to obtain a doctorate in international affairs from the University of Connecticut in 1973, where he received distinction and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Throughout the following decades he wrote extensively on global sociopolitical topics, including a book, Mission in Mufti, which covered the 21-year period of Brazil's military governments. He retired from academia in 1992, after which he and Marilyn enjoyed many years of domestic and international travel, golfing with friends, researching genealogy, and visiting with family.
Bill's family considered him a wise and attentive man, who had a deep and constant faith. He was actively involved in the Presbyterian Church throughout his life, and was most recently a member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church. After the passing of Marilyn, he found great joy in volunteer work within the Williamsburg Landing community, where he served on the Chaplin Services Caring Team. In honor of Bill's generosity and charity, his family requests that in lieu of flowers donations are made to a charity of one's choosing.
A memorial service for Wilfred A. Bacchus and Marilyn L. Bacchus will be held at the Arlington National Cemetery in the summer of 2013. Online condolences may be expressed at www.nelsencares.com.
