Janice Elizabeth (Hogg) Smith Obituary
Janice Elizabeth Hogg Smith, 73, a lifelong Williamsburg resident, died at Georgetown University Hospital on October 16, 2013, surrounded by her loved ones. After a two year battle with "Oscar" a brain tumor which she managed to stabilize, Janice ironically succumbed to complications from diverticulitis. Born to Oakley Woodland "Piggy" Hogg, Sr. and Pearl "Elizabeth " Nuttall Hogg, she was the oldest of three children. Her parents died at a very young age and she helped raise her two siblings along with her own two children. Although her frame was petite, Janice had a smile, sense of humor and bubbly personality that was larger than life. An icon in the fashion industry, Janice's trademarks were her three inch heels, red lipstick, blonde hair and fabulous outfits. She loved her job as a manager and buyer in the family operated clothing store Binns of Williamsburg in Merchants Square. With a career that spanned over fifty years, Janice dressed four generations of families in the region. Not only did she solve the fashion needs of her customers but she also made time to keep up with all members of their families, thus forming lifelong friendships which she treasured. She also cherished the employees of Binns affectionately calling many of them adopted sisters and daughters. Although her love of fashion and Binns was great, her love of family was even greater. Her greatest joy came from spending time with family whether it was at a large family gathering, just sitting on the couch watching a children's movie with her great niece or shopping with her sister. Having traveled all over the world, her favorite place was still her own home and in accordance with her wishes her ashes will be placed there. The loss of Janice will be felt by many. Janice leaves behind a life of over fifty years with Thomas Edward "Ed "Smith, Sr. whom she has loved since high school. She devoted her life to her beloved children Kimberly Smith Jones and Thomas Edward Smith, Jr. also of Williamsburg. She will be greatly missed by her brother Oakley Woodland "Woody" Hogg, Jr. of Mechanicsville, his wife Pam and children Tripp Hogg, Lizzy Losi and Jonathan Hogg, her sister Vickie Hogg Nase of Williamsburg and son Kipp Campbell and wife Amy, her sister-in-law Odell Smith "Bea" Black and brother-in-law Llew N. Smith, Jr. of Williamsburg and their families. Her loss will also be felt by her Great-aunt Sarah Katherine "Kay" Weymouth. Janice will be missed tremendously by many great nieces and nephews who called her "NaNa" including two she was lucky enough to spend time with every day, Kaitlin and Kipton Campbell. A celebration of life ceremony will be held near the Hunt Shrine on Jamestown Island (NOT Jamestown Settlement) on Sunday October 27th. Tents will be used in the event of inclement weather. The family will hold a receiving line on Sunday beginning at 2:30pm. The service will begin at 4pm with a reception following on Jamestown Island. Since many of you have requested a place to send flowers, Binns will be accepting them at 435 Duke of Gloucester St. Williamsburg, Virginia 23185. In lieu of flowers, a memorial contribution in the name of Janice H Smith can be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Norfolk, 404 Colley Avenue Norfolk, Virginia 23507.
