Katie Nowlin Obituary

Katie Mae
Black Nowlin
SULPHUR SPRINGS, TX. -
Our beloved Mother, Katie Mae Black Nowlin, passed into the loving arms of Jesus on Monday, February 17, 2014 joining her husband, Charlie, and daughter, Mary Ann Farmer, who led the welcoming party.
Katie was born on October 1, 1921 in Murchison, TX to Frank and Carrie Black who also predeceased her. She grew up in the Corsicana area, graduating from Powell High School. She married Charlie Ray Nowlin on January 22, 1941. Over the next 22 years, they had eight children. Most of their married life was spent in the lower Rio Grande Valley. Katie was primarily a housewife, although she did have the occasional outside job after the children got older.
After Charlie retired, they moved to Sulphur Springs in 1978. One of the first things they did was join First Baptist Church. Katie has been a faithful member, Sunday School attendee, and member of the senior choir.
After a short stint of living in the country in Dike, Katie and Charlie moved to a little house on the Sulphur Springs Country Club. This allowed them both to take advantage of a hobby they both loved, playing golf. Katie was an active member of the Ladies Golf Association and played up until about a year ago.
Katie liked to take her trips, particularly after Daddy passed in 1990. She loved to go visit family and she loved going to new places and seeing new things. Family reunions were her favorites. She particularly enjoyed the one in New Braunfels last June. Katie is survived by seven of her children who will miss her every day: Tex Nowlin and Utley Nowlin; Jimmy Nowlin and wife, Carol; Ruth Lewman and husband, Jim; Jess Nowlin; Janie Kelley and husband, Jimmy; Becky Kennedy and husband, Doug; Debbie Gillis and husband, Johnny. The following grandchildren and great grandchildren will miss their MaMaw/Momma Katie: Brandt Nowlin and wife, Shana, and children Haley, Mason, and Carly; Shawn Burt and husband, Wayne, and sons Nathan and Jesse Ross; Jim Nowlin and wife, Shiloh, and children Ranen, Jadon, Bryn, and Rhea; Melissa Cook and husband, Chad, and daughter Mallory; Troy Farmer and wife, Angie, and sons Cole and Jake; Katie, Kari, and Kristi Kelley; Jennifer Kennedy; and Matt Gillis and his girlfriend, Nancy McElreath. Also step-grandchild and step-great grandchildren: Cindy Garrett and children, Drew, Lauren, James, and Adam; Josh Hill; and Aly Chapman.
Of Katie's eight brothers and sisters, she leaves behind two sisters, Doris Hansen and Mary Anderson. A sister-in-law, Dorothy Wise also survives. Also remaining are numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren who so enjoyed their times, visits and family reunions with Aunt Katie.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons: Brandt Nowlin, Jim Nowlin, Troy Farmer, Matt Gillis; and her sons-in-law: Jim Lewman, Jimmy Kelley, Doug Kennedy, and Johnny Gillis.
