Daniel IRELAND Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on May 7, 2016.
IRELAND, Daniel Frederick
With hearts breaking, we say goodbye to our beloved brother, Dan Ireland. Dan passed away suddenly from a catastrophic cardiac event at his Los Angeles home on April 14, 2016. Second of four children to Betty and Rainsford Ireland, raised in Vancouver, Canada, he moved to Seattle in his 20s to pursue a life-long dream of working in the film industry. Dan co-established the hugely successful Seattle International Film Festival in the 70s and later moved to L.A. to continue his cinematic journey working for Vestron as a production/distribution executive. It wasn't until Dan began directing movies that he found his true calling, satisfying his ever- present, in-born passion. Dan was the force behind a collection of acclaimed films and worked with a vast community of accomplished artists who truly became his family away from home. Our boy Dan is described consistently by his friends as generous, kind, a great listener, and one who changed people's lives. Dan's sense of humour and his larger-than-life laugh were legendary. He had a caring and loving nature and was always a great support to his family and friends back home in Canada. Dan was predeceased by his beloved mother, Betty, in 2009. Holding the memory of his bright spirit are his brothers Mike (Mary) and Tim (Laura), sister Judy, his beloved nieces and nephews, Aunty Peggy, cousins, half-brothers and friends. Missing him sorely is his cherished girl, Shelley. We are forever proud of our Danny Boy. He made us scream with laughter and always entertained. He was a beautiful soul who touched so many with his gentle spirit. He loved us and we loved him. He lived a memorable life, true to himself... our Dan. Dan's Memorial will be held in Los Angeles in May, after which he will journey home to rest with his Mother. Messages of condolence may be left at

Dan hired me at the Totem Movie Theatre in North Vancouver in 1972. I followed him to the West Vancouver Odeon. He moved on to the theatre on Davie Street then on to the Moore Egyptian Theatre in Seattle. He was so much fun to work for and we had a friendship for many years. Very sad to hear of his passing. He will be fondly remembered for his lively out going warm personality. Regards to his family especially Tim from Bonnie Lamb and my son Stephen Scrimshaw.
