November 30, 1926 – May 11, 2015
After a long life dedicated to family, UBC and her beloved U.E.L. home, Mom passed away on May 11, 2015 surrounded by her children. She will be profoundly missed by John and grandchildren Alec and Tiera, Joan Junior (Rick), and Jane (Glenn). Born in New Westminster to Harold and Ada Johnson of Manchester, England, Mom was the first in her family to attend university. She proudly graduated from UBC in 1946 and went on to become a Senior Lecturer in the UBC Department of English. She enjoyed all aspects of academic life: the teaching, the students, even the committee work! She helped launch UBC's Crane Library, she founded the Canadian Association of Teachers of Technical Writing and was made a Fellow of the American ATTW. Upon retirement, she was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus for her many contributions to UBC. Married to the late John Pavelich, a well-known B.C. athlete, Mom was also a supporter of the Vancouver Olympic Club and became an avid jogger later in life. Mom ran the Vancouver Sun Run and the Waikiki Great Aloha Run into her 80s. Mom was also an avid gardener, a fierce advocate of West Coast modern architecture, and a fount of love, advice and good humour until age took her from us. The family would like to extend its thanks to Dr. Paul Beveridge for his unparallelled care of Mom and to everyone at Sunrise of Vancouver who made her final years so easy. At Mom's request, there will be no service, just a small family gathering and a contribution to her UBC bursary.
