Mark STEINBERG Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Apr. 26, 2014.
STEINBERG, Mark
A brilliant and compassionate person who excelled at whatever he did, died suddenly on Sunday, April 6. He was 43 years old. Mark, born in Montreal, was a lawyer, genealogist, poet and humorist. He was happiest when he could make others giggle. He was one of the youngest ever accepted at McGill's faculty of law. He moved to Toronto after McGill and then to Vancouver. Mark worked mostly on pro bono and legal aid cases. He had an enormous heart. His concern for justice was rooted in his entire being, his Jewish identity and his sense of being a grandson of Holocaust survivors. In recent years, Mark went to extraordinary measures to reclaim his Polish citizenship, developing widely-recognized expertise in genealogy and Jewish shtetl life. Mark, son of Donald and Anne, is survived by his loving friends and family. May his name be as a blessing.

Markie- thinking of you lately. A friend met a mutual friend of ours and so you came up in a story I told. Even after all this time, you can make me smile. I will cherish our memories and forever be thankful for the time we spent together. Rest well.

Hi uncle Markie ! I didn't know this page existed, thank you to the wonderful people who've left such kind messages over the years. It warms my heart to know how Mark's been remembered, I miss him too! He wasn't in my life for long, but he made a big impact. He was incredible, he told me to chase my dreams, I still have the pack of pencils he gave me for my birthday. I don't use them, I don't want them to disappear. I wish he was still here, I really miss him, our family misses him greatly as well. Un jour je serai de retour près de toi

Dear Marc. In Vancouver it is threatening to rain, like it always does. Everyone is suspicious of precocious spring, but the daffodils flirt and the wet cherry blossoms billow in the wind and cling to bicycle tires. I miss the way you hug, and the way you would yell about ideas, and dare us all to believe in something. It is difficult to be older than you. I am lighting a candle for you tonight.

On this Rosh Hashana thinking of you, my long lost cousin, found and then tragically lost forever just weeks before we had scheduled to finally meet in person. You taught me about the Fischer side of our mutual family. You would be very happy to know that I transferred the material you sent me to Yad VShem. I still have not been able to erase our long "message" conversations from FB.I am grateful for the brief time we shared.

Missing you on your birthday, buddy. Our thoughts go out to Mark's Dad and brother and extended family. Still digesting this terrible news. He was a great friend and a wonderful mind. We were roommates for 2 years at McGill and somehow consistently managed to always laugh at each others' jokes forever after. God bless you Mark. We miss you in Montreal.

My heart goes out to anyone morning the loss of this beautiful soul. Be it family or friends, I'm sure he left an impact on anyone who knew him. As cousins, we shared an amazing bond. He was a mentor, a joker, and one of my closest friends. I'm so sad to no longer be able to share parts of my life with him. Mark, I hope you are finally at peace; I will love you always.

Mark and I became friends in 2008. We have kept in touch throughout the years, remaining close friends despite any distance. He was like a brother. We always found life, silliness, and deep conversations about a multitude of topics! I sure learned a lot from Mark! He was a cherished, and very important friend to me. He will always hold a big place in my heart.

I remember Mark driving up to school in that little blue honda scooter. He always had a smile and always in good spirit. He made sure that those around him would be in a good mood. Haven't seen him since High School but I sure do remember him. Sorry to the family for your loss

My deepest condolences to Mark's family. I was close friends with Mark in high school and Cegep. I was always amazed by the breadth of his intelligence and his talent. One minute he would be reciting a haiku that he had written, the next he would be explaining chemistry, all with his incisive humour. He was a very special person and we had some very meaningful conversations. Mark, you deserved so much joy, I hope you have found peace.
