Nancy Mildred Steele

STEELE _ Nancy Mildred (nee Taunton) born April 30, 1919 in Winnipeg, Manitoba; passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2006. Nancy was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Frank, in 2002 and her sister Joan in 2005. She is survived by her six loving children, Michael, Peter, Greg, Janice, Chris and Cathie, 18 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and her sister Mary Broadfoot of Toronto. Nancy left Winnipeg to join the RCAF in 1941. She served in London as Flight Officer and received distinguished service mention in dispatches in the King's New Year Honours List in 1946. After Nancy and Frank were married they lived briefly in Halifax, Vancouver and Toronto. They returned to West Vancouver in 1955 where they raised their family and lived the balance of their lives. Nancy was an active curler, skier and in her earlier years, badminton player having been the junior champion of Manitoba. She was very involved and supportive in her children's lives and was a wonderful volunteer throughout her entire life in the community, church and many charitable organizations. She served as President of the Vancouver Rotary Women's Auxiliary and was honoured by the Rotary Club with the award of Paul Harris Fellow. Her greatest pleasure came from her many grandchildren, each of whom had a special place in her heart. Recently Nancy moved from her home to Amica West Vancouver where she enjoyed the company of many friends both old and new. She continually surprised the family with accounts of outings, fitness classes, yoga and her much loved swimming class. The family is most appreciative of the efforts of all of the Amica staff who enabled an easy transition from her family home and more recently made Nancy's final days comfortable. A memorial service to celebrate Nancy's life will be held on Tuesday, August 1st at 2:00 pm at St. Christopher's Anglican Church, 11th Avenue and Inglewood, West Vancouver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nancy's name to the charity of your choice.
