Olive Savaria Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Jan. 16 to Jan. 17, 2009.

SAVARIA Olive (ne?e Hooper) In her 91st year and with family and care-givers by her side, Olive left us on January 12. Olive and granddaughters Debbie, Katey and Beth (Paul Edwards) and daughter Marise and son-in-law Mike (Sasges) shared a home for almost 20 years, until she entered St. Jude's Anglican Home. Transition was Olive's life story: She came to Canada from England, a war baby travelling with her mother who was returning to the New World after caring for her convalescing soldier-husband. She came to Vancouver from Fernie, her father's war wounds preventing him from going down the mines again. She moved to Kitsilano from downtown, a war bride on the arm of a francophone airman from small-town Ontario. More than 50 years of Kitsilano residency never quite shook Olive of the notion she had left downtown for the suburbs. Olive was our Canadian, and Vancouver, history incarnate, as family and friends and neighbours and pets were hers to fondly remember in her later years. Predeceased by her husband, Lionel, and her daughter, Linda. At Olive's request, a memorial service will not be held. When the weather is fair and the breeze is warm we will gather to toast the memory of a wonderful mother, grandmother, friend and neighbour.
