Kenneth Walley Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Feb. 27, 2010.

WALLEY, Dr Kenneth Morgan March 21, 1917 - February 13, 2010 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and companion. Ken passed away peacefully at home in Kerrisdale after valiantly battling complications due to acute leukemia and recent pneumonia. He is survived by his sons Brian (Tawnie), Robin; grandchildren Christine (Andrew), Alex, Brian II, Ryan, Cody, Chelsea; brother Peter; niece Wendy and loving companion Judith Elliot. He is predeceased by his parents Robin and Clovis Walley of Nanaimo, his first wife Kathleen Joyce (nee) Anderson, second wife Margaret Edgar (nee) Jenkins, daughter Lynn, sister Joan Carmichael and nephew Michael. Ken was born in Vancouver in 1917 to Robin and Clovis Walley. His father was born in Cheshire, England and graduated in chemical engineering from Manchester University with post graduate studies at the University of London before coming to Canada in 1910 and then to Nanaimo in 1912. Ken graduated from McGill University in May of 1941 and immediately joined the Canadian Dental Corps. He was stationed in Italy for a majority of World War II where he formed many lasting friendships. After retiring from the Dental Corps he entered the Columbia University of Orthodontic graduate program which he graduated from in 1947. He returned to Vancouver and established the 1st orthodontic practice in the Vancouver area. He was in exclusive practice until he retired in 1981. Ken was a founding member of the BC Society of Orthodontists, a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada and a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthodontics. In 1951 Ken married Kathleen (Joyce) Anderson, a graduate of UBC in bacteriology, and together they established their family in the Shaughnessy area of Vancouver. Joyce was taken thru cancer from Ken at far too young of an age (57yrs old) and he later donated monies to establish the "Joyce Walley Learning Center" at the Vancouver Museum which opened November 13, 2002. Fortunately he met and eventually re-married Margaret Edgar (nee) Jenkins. She and her family and children from her first marriage, brothers Dale and Gerald, children Brian, Doug, Garth, Greg, Richard and Jane were a tremendous support to Ken throughout his life. Sadly Margaret passed away in November of 2001. In the latter years of Ken's life he met yet another special woman in Judith Elliott. Ken enjoyed many things and had numerous interests including bridge, which he played often, (frequently with his son Robin), dancing, music, canoeing, boating (instilling a lifelong love of boating in his son Brian), skiing and travelling. He had a great sense of humor and was a terrific jokester. He had many life long friendships and was a supportive father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He also was a shrewd businessman owning several office buildings and managing them all on paper right up until the time of his death. He was the primary investor in the Point to Point Destinations time share company. Being a generous philanthropist, he recently donated a large sum of money to the Vancouver Art Gallery where he and his family are honored there on the 4th floor. Ken had an incredibly inquisitive mind and he embraced understanding and knowledge. The philosophy he lived by is emphasized in the family motto; Look to this day for it is life For yesterday is but a dream Tomorrow is only a vision But today well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope. Look well therefore to this day! The family would like to thank Dr. Li, his hematologist, Dr. Ryan his family physician, Classic Caregivers and especially Annie Jimenez, for all of their special love and care they showed Ken. Ken's ashes will be spread on the bluff of his family home in Nanaimo and a few will be travelling with his son Brian to the top of Mt McKinley this coming May. A Celebration of Life service will be held on March 27, 2010 at 11:00am at St. John's (Shaughnessy) Anglican Church, 1490 Nanton Ave, Vancouver, BC with a luncheon to follow.

Mr.Walley was a thoughtful, patient, and kind man. He occasionally would drop by the gallery space I rented from him. And often that led into discussions where he would provide thoughtful suggestions, ideas, and recommendations for the business. He took an interest in me and my gallery and I will fondly remember Ken.

I met Kenneth Walley in 1968, as I worked for him as his assistant, receptionist and lab person, for his orthodontic practice in the Birks Bldg. for many years. He was a kind man, very generous to me and I will always remember him fondly, as my first work experience as well. It was a very good time. He lived a long life which I am so happy to know.
Many blessings to his family.
