Max COHEN Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Oct. 6 to Oct. 8, 2012.
COHEN, Max
May 5, 1944 – October 5, 2012
It is with great sadness that the family of Max Cohen announces his passing on October 5, 2012 after a battle with cancer. Max was born May 5, 1944 to Kitty and Abraham Cohen in Bombay, India where he grew up with brothers Alan and Julian and sister Florence. Max leaves behind his loving wife Lois Cohen (nee Smith), his children Chris Dumont (Linda) of Burnaby and Cheryl Anderson (Steve), grandchildren Shiloh and Sierra Anderson of Delta, sister Florence Salama (Hy Bromberg) of Vancouver, brothers Alan Cohen (Ruby) of Tel Aviv, Israel and Julian Cohen (Flo) of Sydney, Australia. Young and adventurous at age 18 Max moved to London, England in 1962. He briefly volunteered on a kibbutz in Israel during the Six Day War. In October 1969 he moved to Vancouver where he was soon joined by his mother and sister. It was in Vancouver, 42 years ago that Max met Lois in 1970, expanded his family and became a loving and devoted husband for 32 years. In work Max focused his career in the field of lighting. After employment at Russell Industries Max stepped out on his own and singlehandedly established Maxilite Manufacturing in 1977 growing it to a successful business which continues today. He enjoyed his business trips to Italy, Spain, and China and his sales trips across Canada. Max loved the outdoors. He enjoyed cross-country skiing, kayaking, shooting, racquetball, tennis, cycling, hiking or walking most weekends. He was past president and long-time member of the Nordic Wrecks Cross Country ski club and took many weekend bus trips with Lois and friends to destinations throughout BC. Leisure travel took him many places including Australia, Africa and Egypt. Max was a wonderful photographer and loved to share his interest of nature and travel through prints, slide shows and videos. A ceremony and burial will be at the Schara Tzedeck Cemetery at 2345 Marine Dr. New Westminster on Sunday, October 7, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. A remembrance reception will be held on Thursday, October 11, 2012 between noon and 3:00 p.m. at the Riverway Golf Clubhouse at 9001 Bill Fox Way off Byrne Rd, Burnaby, BC Restaurant: 604-297-4888. This event is open to all that knew Max.

To Lois and Family, my sincerest sympathies on the loss of our good friend Max, our friendship started with the NW ski club and extended into several other good activities. Max was strong, compassinate, loyal, fun and a good thinker and idea generator. I will miss him dearly. We have gone, over the years, through a lot of K's together, giving many good happy memories.

It is with a heavy heart that we send our condolences to the family on the loss of dearest Max. He was very close to all of our family. He often surprised us with his calls whenever he visited Toronto. In recent years, he was often too busy to stop by, but he always called to say hello. We were fortunate to spend time with him and Lois a year ago when we visited Vancouver. It was fun to hear about his travels and watch him entertain us with the tricks he taught his bird, Quito. We'll miss Max very much.

I was fortunate to have met Max and Lois as fellow members of the Sea kayak association and also Nordic recs xcountry ski club. Together with his wife Lois we shared and enjoyed many great kayak and ski excursions. He was such an interesting person and had many passions and a zest to enjoy life with his wife and many friends. He was a very kind man and will be missed.

To the Cohen family,
Please accept our heartfelt condolences for your loss. Though we didn't get the opportunity to spend more time with you guys. It was easy to see what a lovely man Max was, and how much you loved each other. We loved spending time with you over brunch awhile back and I kept hoping to have you guys over but my own battle made that difficult, however I've always kept you both in my prayers and thoughts and will continue to do that for you Lois in the hopes that my prayers bring you the strength and courage you need to get through this very difficult time. Please let us know if there is any way we can help day or night Lois, just call and we will be there.
I'm sure Max is entertaining the creator right now with his charm and of course his parlor tricks with his heavenly designated Parrot!

Please accept our deepest condolences.

My cousin Max was like a brother to me and my twin brother Eddie. We grew up together in India and had a wonderful childhood. We moved to London, England and when Max followed later he again was part of my family. I shall forever hold his memory in my deepest affection. May you rest in peace, Max.

To Lois and Family,

Max was such a dear and kind person to me and my family. I hope you will soon find comfort for your loss of such a devoted and loving husband, father and grandfather. I only have good memories of Max, which in itself is a comfort and a treasure for me to have, as Max was a kind father figure to me and he was my favorite uncle.
