Noboru SAWAI Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Apr. 30, 2016.
SAWAI, Noboru
February 18, 1931 - April 23, 2016
It is with deepest sorrow that we mourn the passing of Canadian artist Noboru Sawai on April 23, 2016 at the age of 85. Noboru was born in Takamatsu, Japan and spent his early childhood years in and around his birthplace. In 1946, while working as a cook's assistant at the U.S. military headquarters, Noboru studied English with a man who would forever change his life, American GI Wesley Priebe. As a result of this friendship, Noboru was able to travel to the United States to study at the Lutheran Bible Institute. However, shortly after his arrival, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis and spent the next nine years at a TB hospital in San Antonio, Texas. Once he was discharged, Noboru moved to Minnesota to resume his studies, first at Augsburg College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1966, and then at the University of Minnesota, where he received his Master of Fine Arts in 1969. In 1971, he moved back to Japan to study traditional woodblock printmaking with Toshi Yoshida at the International Hanga Academy in Tokyo. Later that year he joined the University of Calgary Art Department, where he taught printmaking and drawing for the next 22 years until he retired. Noboru also established a printmaking studio in Vancouver where he worked to develop his technique of combining the Japanese method of woodcut printmaking with the intaglio techniques of printing from etched copper plates. He was internationally known for making erotic art, using imagery from diverse time periods, traditions, and cultures. After he retired from teaching, Noboru extended his interests to paper-making, and made several visits to Japan over the years to learn about and experiment with making his own handmade paper, with the generous support of the Kashiki paper company in Kochi, Japan. He taught woodblock techniques to the Inuit in Cape Dorset, Pangnirtung and Baker Lake, and his work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and competitions, and is in major public and private collections across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. He was a deeply philosophical, passionate, and eccentric human being. In his heyday, he loved to entertain friends in his kitchen, renovate his studio, and tinker in his workshop. He will be missed as a professor, mentor, colleague, father, and friend. He will be lovingly remembered by his life partner Mayvan Wong; his children Naomi Sawai (Walter) and Kenji Sawai (Jody); nephew Haruhiko Yamasaki; his sister Aiko and brother Kiyoshi in Japan; and a host of long-time close friends. The family would like to thank the care teams at Mount St. Joseph's Hospital, the Pender Community Health Unit, and ABC Home Support Service for their compassionate care and support. A Celebration of Life will be held for family and friends in May 2016. Details to be announced.

My deepest sympathy to the family for your loss. I had the great pleasure of being taught drawing by Naboru at the University of Calgary in the early 70's. And I have always loved his print work. I remember a kind and generous teacher and have thought of him often over the years. He will remain fondly in my memory.

To the family and friends of Noboru, I extend my deepest sympathies. I first met Noboru in the 1980s when I was writing an article about him and his printmaking studio. He was wonderfully gracious and forthcoming about his art and his life. Again, my condolences.

Some people light the candle at both ends.Noboru would often light it in the middle at the same time.We spent an interesting day sliding a new press down the hill in his yard to his studio.

It was a pleasure to meet this kind man. Canada has lost one of its finest printmakers. The Burnaby Art Gallery is very lucky to hold works he donated over the years. On behalf of the gallery, our condolences to his family and friends.

I first met Noboru when we both took jobs in the Art Department in 1971. We worked together for some 20 years and he helped keep me sane. We shared many good times together sipping JacK Danials and complaining about academia. He would tell me stories about his days in Beria, Kentucky and his first contact with mountain people and the fact that they were tolerant of him and him of them pointing to his kindness, acceptance and generosity. I could go on and on but will simply conclude that I will miss him.

I have had the pleasure and opportunity to get to know Noboru spanning 30 yrs. He has been very generous with his printmaking knowledge, sense of humor, and and attempts at real-estate advise.
I will miss him as a friend. He was instrumental in supporting the concept of our Biennial International Mini Print Exhibition. I feel he lives on through ll the people he has influenced over the ears of teaching and by his creative way to look at life.

Dear Kenji & Naomi, Although we have spoken to you since Norobu's death, we wanted to say again that we thinking of you and wishing you were nearer, especially at this sad time. Noboru was one of a kind. I am sure he will be greatly missed. You took such loving care of him over the past few years as he struggled with his health. He was a lucky man to have children like you two. I think he would have been proud to read what you wrote here. Sincere sympathies to you both and to Jody & Walter.
