Robert Kent Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Apr. 27 to Apr. 29, 2017.
Robert Chan Kent June 19, 1919 - April 19, 2017 Robert passed peacefully at home on April 19, 2017 just eight weeks short of his 98th birthday.

Robert was born in Victoria to Charles and Toy Chan-Kent on June 19th, 1919, their third child and oldest son and one of eventually fourteen brothers and sisters. Robert accomplished much in his 98 years. He was one of the first Chinese UBC Commerce graduates in 1941. He joined the Chinese Regiment of the Canadian Army in 1944 and parachuted into Burma at the end of WW2. Later he would become an active member of Army Navy Air Force Veterans Unit 280 serving as president. Upon returning to Vancouver he began a life-long career working in the family business, Aero Garment and Kent Clothiers. In his later years Robert could be found enjoying a round of golf with his brothers or a good but noisy game of mahjong with his friends. He enjoyed traveling and vacationing at his home in Palm Springs. To all who knew Robert, he was a kind, unassuming, gentle man, forever happy and always ready to lend a hand to someone in need. Robert was a devoted husband and his greatest joy and source of pride was his family.

Robert is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lesley; his children, Bob (Linda-Mae), Randy (Lorraine), David (Leslie), and Nancy (Bill); his much loved grandchildren Kat (Telyn), Tracey (Rob), Hilary (Chris), Lindsay, Shannon, Marissa, Connor, Madison, Matthew, and David; and his two great-granddaughters Olivia and Vivian.

Robert is predeceased by his brothers Wellington and Bunny and sister Louise (Bob) and survived by his sisters Mary, Doris, Bessie (Eddie), Kay, Suzy, Noreen and his brothers Joe, Ernie (Yvonne), Sonny, and Peter (Rosabelle).

A celebration of life will take place on May 1, 2017 from 2:00PM - 5:00PM at Marine Drive Golf Club, 7425 Yew Street, Vancouver. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of B.C.

I have very fond memories of visiting Uncle Robert on my trips to Vancouver. He would offer the best advice on business and help me with my start up in the clothing industry when I was younger. Uncle Robert was a great business person but his greatest legacy is his wonderful and successful family that we always enjoyed during our visits during our annual Christmas trips. I always enjoyed the skits the family did during the talents shows. He will be greatly missed.

With heartfelt condolences, Jeff, Mai, Jessica and Monica Kent

An accomplished business fixture on the Vancouver apparel scene for decades, a committed and joyful family man, husband, and friend to many. It is a rare thing to witness a mere mortal achieving success in all of these worlds. Thank you for generously opening your Palm Springs doors on many an occasion to the Sedger clan. Rest in peace, Uncle Robert. We will remember you always. Love, Julie, Caroline and Claudia

I have so many fun memories with my godfather. That's who I considered Uncle Robert to be in my life. Our two families shared so much laughter and good times. Uncle Robert had a rich, long life. He always had a smile and warm greeting. He's united with my dad - the two of them are joking around right now. My deepest sympathies to Auntie Lesley, Bobby, Randy, David, Nancy and family. Love to you all.

Please know how saddened I am by your loss.
I remember your father, 'Uncle Bob,' so well! Always smiling, he was among my favourites of our father's many close friends. He had a deep, rich laugh. And seemed at once so gentle but somehow robust in the evident joy he took in his beautiful family. He was a true and loyal friend to my father for which I will remain forever grateful. Such a good man--my condolences to Auntie Leslie and the entire Kent family. Sincere best wishes, Jari

We will greatly miss our Uncle Robert. He had such a warm heart and always smiling. We have been blessed with our family's longevity and close bonds. It hurts to have a close member of our family move on to their next journey. However, they have lived a long a prosperous life full of love and laughter... love, Bryan Kent
