Robert Schmidt Obituary

Robert C. Schmidt

Thousand Oaks, CA

Robert "Bob" Schmidt, age 92, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2016, at the home of his grand-daughter in Newbury Park, after a brave fight with several ailments.

Bob was born in Greencastle, Indiana on January 17, 1924 to Carl & Edith Schmidt. Bob got his mother to sign papers allowing him to enter active military service in the U.S. Army on his 17th birthday in 1941. He served in both Africa & Europe during WWII. Bob was awarded an EAME Theatre Ribbon w/3 Bronze Stars, the American Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Ribbon, and the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in action.

After his honorable discharge in 1945, Bob met the love of his life; Fay. They were married after only TWO dates in 1946. In 1958 with their beloved daughter; Katherine Ann, Bob & Fay moved to Thousand Oaks. They remained happily married for 53 years, before Fay's passing in 1999.

Bob had worked for Lockheed Aircraft Corp. for several years, and then for General Motors Corp. for 35 years. Bob also worked as the delivery boy for his daughter & grand-daughter at ABC Balloons, until retiring after his 90th birthday.

Bob's hobbies included wood working, working on vehicles and anything else he could get his hands on. If a tool didn't exist, Bob would make it himself! Bob even rode motorcycles, and one of his riding partners was Steve McQueen. He also enjoyed spying on his son-in-law, who lived next door & calling his grand-daughter at all hours. He loved telling his stories....over & over again to anyone who would listen. Bob had a heart of gold & would help anyone who needed it, except for Dunderheads, he didn't like Dunderheads! Those who knew Bob, all have funny stories to remember him by, and if you don't, well, you're probably a Dunderhead too.

Bob is survived by his son-in-law, Scott Johnson; his granddaughter, Donna Long (wife of Donny Long); grandson, Matthew Johnson (husband of Courtney Johnson); and his best buddy/great-grandson, Tymothy Kane.

Public graveside services, with military honors will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016, 1:00pm, at Pierce Bros. Valley Oaks-Griffin Memorial Park in Westlake Village. A celebration of Grandpa's life will follow at the home of his son-in-law in Thousand Oaks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any Veteran's program, the NRA, or political candidate of your choice, as long as it isn't Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders.

I'm sad I never got to meet Grandpa Bob, what a treasure he was to his family, through watching short video's and listening to his grand daughters stories I felt like I already knew him, he should have had his own TV show! Everyone would be blessed to have a man like this in their lives. Thank you Donna for sharing him with us, he was lucky to have you caring for him at the end.

Bob was a great friend and neighbor to our family. He was always ready to spend some time and share some stories with us. He and his family were wonderful to grow up next door to. Bob will be missed :)

I always enjoyed listening to his WWII stories and jokes. I had the opportunity to say good bye and told him how much I appreciated everything he did for me. That day I also told him I was coming back to visit him and he answered me, "I won't be here anymore, I'm ready to go"....Grandpa, rest in peace.

Donna, your wonderful Grandpa was always a joy to see coming through our door when he delivered balloons and helium to us. He and Dave would talk for at least an hour on a job that should have taken 10 minutes. Lol. He always had a good story to tell. He was a kind and generous person. He had ingenious ideas, like the machine with a big wheel that turned ribbon around and around it so then we could cut it all to the same length with one swipe. What a time saver that was. He will be greatly missed. I'm glad that we knew him. God's blessings on you and your family. We love you, Jeanne and Dave

Donna, we always enjoyed your Grandpa. I know Bill liked the war stories. LOL Bob brought alot of joy to this world. In his own way, of course. Now he is at peace with your Mom and Grandma.

We are grateful for the friendship and love that we feel for each other. These many years with Bob have been a special time for me and my family. We are keenly aware that the joy that is ours is a temporary pleasure. Our lives will not always be this stable and secure. Change is inevitable, and it will come to us, too. We will accept it when it comes, of course, but we are grateful for the happiness and warmth that has been ours these many years. We have had more than our share of good things, and we are so thankful for the many years that we have loved and been loved by Bob.
