Donal Warren McWhirter went to be with his Blessed Lord on the evening of Friday, October 26, 2012, at his home in Ojai, following a long illness. He was a devout Christian, a member of Live Oak Christian Fellowship and a resident of Ventura County for the last 62 years. He was 88 years old.
Donal was born on January 14, 1924, in Ramsey Township, Ill., to Orvil and Valey Carlock McWhirter. He spent most of his childhood and early years living in Vandalia, Ill.
Donal faithfully served in the United States Navy during and after World War II. From 1942 until 1948, he was stationed in the South Pacific and North African theaters and was a crew member on the USS Ajax, USS Manchester, USS Juneau and the USS Winslow.
He is survived by his wife, Kathlyn Hatcher McWhirter; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Henry Geisman; brother, Bill Langdon; grandchildren, Cindy Ruhkamp, John Peterson and Jennifer Peterson and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his wife, Pauline McWhirter, and three grandchildren, Terry Shores, Robin Richey and Toni Wright.
A traditional graveside memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 1, at 1 p.m. at Ivy Lawn Memorial Park in Ventura with Pastor Tom Hatcher officiating.
