Donald Murray Witlin, 74, of Durham, NH, formerly of Ventura, CA and Mill Rift, PA, died on October 26, 2019 at Oceanside Nursing Home in Hampton, NH.
Born November 29, 1944 in Flushing, NY, he was the son of Murray and Carolyn (Laffan) Witlin.
Donald graduated from Delaware Valley Joint High School, Milford PA. He received his BA in Sociology from New York University and Masters from St. Louis University.
He worked as a Peace Corps volunteer and was proud to serve four years in the U.S. Navy before his 30-year career as a social worker, honored for his work with children and families.
Donald was an avid baseball fan. His loyalty to the Brooklyn Dodgers extended to his children and grandchildren. His favorite quote was by Jackie Robinson: "A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives".
He was in his element in the great outdoors. Fond memories were made camping with family, exploring across the United States. Music, movies, current events and pop culture were also Donald's passion. His experiences in life gave all who knew him true meaning.
Survivors include his children, Sylvia Rua and her husband Keith of Durham, Donelle Conley and her husband David of Camarillo, CA; stepson Frederick Austin-Gilbert and his wife Felice of Ojai, CA; former spouse, Shirley Witlin of Thousand Oaks, CA; his sisters, Karen Zaimes Kubik and her husband Gerald of Exeter, NH and Suzanne Mosher of Hancock, NY; his nephews, Peter Zaimes of Exeter, NH and Benjamin Zaimes of Stratham, NH and their families; Neil Mosher of Hancock, NY,(and pre-deceased by Shawn Mosher), niece Heather Riley of Middletown, NY; grandchildren, Makenna, Laila, Declan, Shane, Christian, and Phoebe.
Private services will be conducted at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at the New Hampshire Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH.

I very much enjoyed my time serving with Don onboard the USS SAN MARCOS LSD25 from Sept 1967 to Aug 1970. He was a personelman and I a yeoman, working in the same small office of 5.
