Santa paula

Ofelia Virginia (Urias) De La Torre, 87, of Santa Paula, California passed away peacefully August 12, 2017 with family by her side.

Ofelia was born on July 3, 1930 in Santa Paula to Donaciano and Anita Urias. Ofelia was a long time resident of Santa Paula, and attended local elementary and middle schools. As a young teenager, she went with her family who followed the summer fruit and vegetable crops throughout central California, always insisting she be able to return to school in the Fall to continue her education. Always a proud Cardinal, Ofelia graduated from Santa Paula Union High School in 1949 as a Lifelong California Scholastic Federation member. She later attended Ventura College, enrolling in business classes to enrich her education and business endeavors. Ofelia married Luis De La Torre in 1952, they were married for 44 years before he preceded her in death. They had three children - Robert, Catherine and Ronald.

Ofelia was a secretary at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, and later stayed home to raise her family. She joined the Santa Paula Union High School District staff as a Classroom Aide, later advancing to the position of the Principal's Secretary at Renaissance Continuation High School. She retired in 1992 after 25 years of dedicated service.

Ofelia will be remembered for her friendly personality, she was known as a capable and professional employee and she was admired for being a bold woman and community leader who was dedicated to the children and families of Santa Paula. During her life she proudly served on the Casa del Mexicano Board, Ventura County Grand Jury, and as a founding member and Officer of Santa Paula Latino Town Hall. She passionately advocated for quality education, diversity and equitable learning opportunity for all students of the Santa Paula Elementary School District, serving 12 years on the district Board of Trustees. She took great joy in helping families fulfill the dream of homeownership as Owner and Broker of Glen City Realty, a business Ofelia co-owned with her dear sister and confidante, Ramona Chavez. Ofelia was recognized for her community service, civic contributions and advocacy by Santa Paula Latino Town Hall and as a Santa Paula Woman of Distinction.

Ofelia had a blessed and fulfilled life, she enjoyed traveling and raising children with her husband, visiting with her children/grandchildren/great grandson and spending Sundays with her family at Steckel Park. She especially enjoyed trips to Las Vegas with her beloved sisters, laughing, eating great desserts, gambling and winning on her favorite Keno machines!

Ofelia is survived by her children, Robert De La Torre, Catherine De La Torre-Martinez (husband Robert), Ronald De La Torre (wife Anna); grandchildren Flora Herrera (husband Billy), Jared Martinez, Robert X. Martinez, Cameron De La Torre; great grandson, Sebastian Herrera; siblings, Eleanor Ramirez, Ramona Chavez, Frank Urias (wife Eva); and many nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends. She was preceded in death by siblings Alfonso Urias, Celia Jimenez, Rita L. Mendoza, Maria Avilez and Candelaria Pardo.

Ofelia's family is grateful for the kind and loving care she received while at Vista Cove Nursing Facility. We thank family members, friends and acquaintances for their kind words, blessings and visits made to our Ofelia. Our hearts are broken, however, we find great comfort knowing she is in peace. I always considered Ofelia a wonderful woman and good friend. She was indeed one of a kind that had the best interests of all at heart. Although Ofelia will be greatly missed, she left her mark on her family, friends, and community. Love you, Ofelia, fly with the Angels (and I'm sure you'll get them organized)!
