Stephen D. Smith Obituary
Stephen D. Smith

Oxnard, CA

Stephen D. (Steve) Smith was born to parents Harriet Joy and Charles Hilaire Smith on December 13, 1946 in San Diego, CA. He passed away peacefully on March 2, 2017 in Oxnard, CA with his family at his side.

Steve is survived by his wife of 45 years, Kathy and their children, Sean (Colleen) and Scott as well as 2 grandchildren, Alivia and Owen Smith. He is also survived by his brother, Webb (Avalee), and two cousins, Linda (Larry) and Barbara.

Steve's family moved to Bonita, CA in 1955. He attended Ella B. Allen School where he met lifelong friends, Gary and Richard, and moved on to Hilltop High School. He was a musician and played most of the brass instruments in the school's well recognized Marching Lancer Band. He went on to attend San Diego State University and again played in the band there.

Steve served in the Coast Guard Reserves (1966 ? 1972) at the Coast Guard Air Station in San Diego while beginning his management career at Sears. Once again he enjoyed playing in the Coast Guard Band. It was at Sears that he met Kathy and developed friendships that have endured almost 50 years. After many years at Sears, Steve went to work at Dean Witter Reynolds in San Diego as a Stock Broker. He was then invited to be a part of their management program. He worked for two years in NYC in the World Trade Center training new brokers. This was followed by a managerial assignment to the Northridge, CA office and the family moved from the East Coast to the Simi Valley area. He was later the Manager for the Pasadena office. In the final years of his career, Steve worked as an independent broker in Simi.

Steve grew up in a Rotary family. His father had been active in Rotary over 55 years and his mother had been active in what was then known as the Inner Wheel before women were allowed to join Rotary. So it was natural that when the family returned to California and the Simi area, that he join the Simi Sunrise Rotary Club. Steve has always been very proud of his association with this organization. He served as President, as well as in many other positions in the Club and at the District level, and was instrumental in the development and success of the Simi Cajun & Blues Music Festival. Steve was the proud recipient of many Paul Harris Awards and other recognitions during his time in the Club. The friendships he developed in Rotary were very dear to him.

Steve was a generous man. Generous with his time, talents and affection. He loved his family with all his heart, he treasured and nurtured the friendships he'd made throughout the years. He always strived to do the fair and right thing. He was a warrior and beat the odds for so many years yet still lived a wonderfully full life of love, joy and laughter. Throughout his life and until the end, he always echoed the song "I did it my way". He will be missed so much by his family and friends.

Services will be held on Saturday March 11th at 1:00 pm at the Simi Covenant Church, 4680 Alamo St, Simi Valley, CA 93063. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Simi Sunrise Rotary Charitable Foundation, PO Box 941101, Simi Valley, CA 93094-1101.
