Katherine Pursell

Katherine Hildreth Pursell Head Start Director Katherine Hildreth Pursell passed away August 15, 2012. She was 92 years old at the time. She was born in Oakland, CA on July 29, 1920. Katherine spent her childhood years in Redding & Trinity Counties in Northern California. Her parents had a summer home in a wilderness designated area. She grew up fishing, hiking into the glacier lakes around her home. When she graduated from high-school she went to San Jose State College. There she studied music emphasizing piano and voice. It was there where she met Rex Pursell, a member of the champion, undefeated football team that year. The years went by: Rex was in both World War II and the Korean War while Katherine cared for the two children they now had. Katherine became the principal of the Head Start Program in Porterville as her children got older. In their retired years, Rex & Katherine became avid golfers and joined River Island golf course in Porterville, CA. There they won single and couples local golf tournaments. Kay and Rex both made a hole in one during their golfing years. The two had sixty nine wonderful years together. They are survived by their children; Mike Pursell of Fresno and Karen Buhl of Visalia. Four grandchildren; Mark Buhl, Amy Fogelman and Erin Conklin, Lee Marie Pursell plus six great grandchildren Memorial graveside services will by held 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Visalia District Cemetery for both her and her husband Rex Pursell who had his own memorial services previously.
