After high school, Dick served in the Army Reserves In 1961, Dick met the love of his life, the former Marleen Silva. They married on August 18, 1963 and started their lives together in Northern California. Their son Gary was born in 1967. They moved to Tulare in 1971. Once in Tulare, Dick purchased and ran Tulare Firestone, which he sold to Lionel Pires in 1984. From 1984-86 Dick worked at Hooper, Spuhler, Sturgeon Insurance Services. Later, he was the Purchasing Agent, eventually retiring as the Solid Waste Superintendent with the City of Tulare after 17 years. After retirement, Dick became the unofficial, self-appointed, consultant for the City of Tulare, often visiting and joking with City employees. He was also a regular member of morning coffee groups at both Jack's Git N Go and Donut Village.

Dick was extremely active in the Tulare community he so loved. His many activities included the Tulare Union Athletic Boosters, Lions Club, Antique Farm Equipment Show, HICAP and Central Valley Street Rods (where he earned the affectionate nickname "Grumpy"). He was a long-time volunteer of the Farm Show/World Ag Expo. Most recently, he was named a lifetime member of the RC Condors Flying Club. He was an avid Green Bay Packers and San Francisco Giants fan. Dick was always quick to lend a hand or advice to any and all. Known for his wit, Dick readily had a joke or anecdote to share. Dick is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Marleen; son Gary (Kathleen) and grandchildren Jack and Mia.
