Yook Ah Eng
Fresno - Yook Ah Eng passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, in Fresno, CA. Born on August 1, 1922 in Taishan, China, he was the only son and youngest of three siblings.
He emigrated to the United States in 1933, as a young boy and joined his father James Hong Eng in Seattle, Washington. He later spent time in Houston, Texas and San Francisco, California as a young man. In November of 1947, he returned to China and married his life partner, Yee Har Wong. His first child was born in China and his second was born in Tulare, California. He had 4 additional children in Seattle, Washington. In 1966 the family relocated to Lindsay, CA. There he owned and operated Chop Sticks Cafe, a popular Chinese American diner. After he helped all his children graduate from college, the restaurant was sold in 1986 and Yook and Yee retired. Yook maintained a home in Lindsay, but he spent many of his golden years in Santa Barbara where he enjoyed the wonderful weather and socializing with Chinese friends. He also enjoyed extended visits with his children in Fresno, Lindsay and San Diego, CA. His final years were at Somerford Place in Fresno where he received loving care from all the staff. He had recently celebrated his 97 birthday with his large and loving family by his side in Fresno.
Yook was preceded in death by his cherished wife of almost 70 years, Yee Har and his beloved daughter, Jean Eng Maxwell.
He is survived by his five remaining children, Joan Ishida and husband Randy of Lindsay, Steven Eng and wife Chau of Maryland, Edwin Eng and wife Marlene of Fresno, Harvey Eng of Lindsay, Susan Eng-DenBaars and husband Steve of Santa Barbara and son-in-law, Robert Maxwell of San Diego. Yook loved his 13 grandchildren, Cindy Ishida and husband Diego of New York, Christopher Ishida and wife Allison of Singapore, Ryan Ishida and fiancé Kelly of Lindsay, Andrew and Sarah Eng of Maryland, Barrett Eng of Fresno, Rachel Eng DeJongh and husband Ethan of Fresno, Hannah Maxwell and fiancé Ricky of Los Angeles, Emily and Austin Maxwell of Los Angeles, Kaitlin, Dalton and Jared Eng-DenBaars of Santa Barbara; and great-grandchildren, Luther, Zachary, Vivienne, Tyler, and Kai.
A Funeral Service will be held at Myers Funeral Home, 248 N. E St., Porterville, CA, on Monday, November 25, 2019, at 10:00 am. Final resting will be at Lindsay Cemetery, 639 S. Foothill Ave., Lindsay, CA.
