Gunther Schueller Obituary
Gunther Schueller Our dear father, Gunther Schueller, passed away Tuesday, December 4, 2012, at 91 years of age. A 56 year resident of Riverside County, he lived the last five and a half years by his daughter, Sylvia Schueller Liddi and her family in Visalia, California. He died from cardiopulmonary arrest. Gunther was born on October 28, 1921 in Breslau, Germany. When he was five years old, he immigrated to the United States with his mother, where he grew up in Brooklyn, New York. At the age of 25, he was drafted into the United States Army where he was trained as a sharp shooter, earning him the "Sharp Shooter Victory Medal", amongst other honors. He also received an honorable discharge after serving in Allied-occupied postwar Germany. In 1947-1948, he met and married Helga Link in Weisbaden, Germany. Afterwards, they primarily resided in Riverside, California where they raised their family of five children. Initially, Gunther worked as a skilled carpenter to support his family and studied by night to earn two Bachelor of Arts degrees and a Master's degree. In 1960 he began teaching high school in the Alvord Unified School District. Besides his family, our father absolutely loved the arts and nature. He never met a stranger and his favorite past time was to travel, especially in Europe with his beloved relatives. It is almost difficult to find a good picture of him as he was always behind the camera, taking a endless stream of photos. Gunther is preceded in death by his wife, Helga and his son, Ralph. His parents and his brother, Heinz, are deceased, as well. He is survived by his son Reinhard, and his wife Lori Schueller, his daughter Vivien, and her husband Ulf Hennig, his daughter Sylvia, and her husband Michael Liddi, and his daughter Charlotte, and her husband Bill Fowler. He also was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. His sister, Annelie Rupieper, continues to thrive at the age of 95, and throughout his life, Gunther has been blessed by a wonderful assortment of loving nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles. A memorial service will be held at Salser and Dillard Funeral Chapel at 127 East Caldwell Avenue, Visalia, California 93277 at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 13, 2012. A viewing will precede the service from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., on December 17, 2012 at Pierce Brothers Crestlawn Memorial Park, located at 11500 Arlington Ave., Riverside, California 92505. Condolences can be e-mailed to [email protected]
